Friday, Dec. 31, 2010: Mount St. Michael, Stepinac on collision course
Leading off today: Mount St. Michael and Archbishop Stepinac will be holding their own little tournament of champions in boys basketball on Tuesday.

Each won a title last night in the Slam Dunk tournament in White Plains, and they conveniently play each

other next week when the teams resume their regular-season schedules.

"It's going to be another war," Mountaineers coach Tom Fraher predicted to The Journal News. "I was talking to (Stepinac coach) Tim Philp on the way out and he said to me, 'Another tough one on Tuesday.' And I said 'Same thing.'"

Mount St. Michael (10-0) beat Somers JFK 73-59 behind 31 points from Peter Aguilar and 27 by Clarence White, who made six three-pointers.

"They're loaded in every position; every position was taller than us and faster than us," JFK coach Frank Kelly said.

Stepinac scored a 61-42 victory over Horace Greeley. Conroy Baltimore put up nine points, 10 rebounds and seven blocked shot to lead the way.

Frustration showing: Peekskill players scuffled with each other in the locker room following a 70-44 loss to Burke Catholic in the consolation bracket of the Slam Dunk at the Westchester County Center, The Journal News reported.

Coach Lou Panzanaro said the incident was not serious and that no players will be disciplined.

"(It was) frustration from losing. They're not used to it, they don't like it, and I don't want them to like it," he said. "I want them to control their emotions, but I don't want them to accept the losing. And somebody took exception to somebody's criticism, that's all."

It came in the aftermath of Peekskill's 6-for-35 shooting performance in the second half as Burke broke open an 11-point game.

"I have no answer right now. I have no answer. I have no idea about this team," Panzanaro said after his team slipped to 3-4 for the season. "They just don't play with any heart, any intensity, no defense. I just don't know."

Section 5 nail-biter: In a possible preview of the Section 5 large-school final, Rush-Henrietta beat East 65-64 to avenge a trio of losses to the Orientals a year ago.

Mandell Thomas scored a game-high 34 points, and Ashton Broyld (10 points, 17 rebounds) nailed down the win with a short baseline shot with :07 to go.

The teams have another non-leaguer scheduled Jan. 29 at East.

STOP-DWI final: Imhotep Charter School from Philadelphia built a big early lead and coasted past Smyrna, Ga., Campbell High 63-41 in the STOP-DWI Holiday Classic's National Division title in Binghamton.

George Washington University recruit Erik Copes scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to earn the MVP award.

Honoring the best: Kudos to the folks at the Democrat and Chronicle for publishing a beautiful 24-page special section announcing the All-Greater Rochester teams for all sports from the fall season. The effort was complemented by a nice online presentation as well.

However, here's hoping that they're able to sell a little advertising in future AGR sections, because one page of ads in a 24-page section makes for a doomed business model.

Extra points: In Wednesday hockey action, Suffern edged West Genesee 3-1 in the final of Massena's tournament. MVP Jake Jaeger scored twice in the second period to wipe out a 1-0 deficit against the defending state champs. Tyler Stark made 11 saves. Williamsville North beat Massena 7-1 in the consolation game.

Indian River wrestling coach Jamee Call earned his 200th career victory en route to a 9-0 performance by the Warriors at the Mountain Duals on Wednesday in Dolgeville. Call is in his 14th season.

Adios, 2-0-1-0: On behalf of everyone in the NYSSWA, I'd like to wish you all a happy new year and the hope of a great start to 2011.
