Football two-minute read: Games of Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010
Kicking off: Dominick Delucia Jr. ran 37 times for 160 yards and two touchdowns yesterday as 23rd-ranked Pittsford defeated No. 9 Rochester East 23-12 to set up a rematch next week with Rush-Henrietta, ranked sixth in Class AA.

Pittsford's only loss was by a 35-3 score at Rush-Henrietta on a soggy Thursday afternoon to open Week 3. "We're going to have our hands full,'' Pittsford coach Keith Molinich told the Democrat and Chronicle. "We're going to give it our best shot."

Rush-Henrietta is coming off a 66-21 rout of Gates Chili in which R-H scored the night's final 46 points. Seven players scored touchdowns for the Royal Comets, with senior Devin Wofford picking up three to go along with 125 yards on 10 carries. Ashton Broyld threw three TD passes and ran for another score.

Also in Class AA, Jamestown beat Riverside 7-6 in the Section 6 quarterfinals for the Red Raiders' first postseason victory in a decade. Ni'Kyle Taylor's interception with 2:33 to go wrapped up the win, and Joe Compion carried the ball 35 times for 233 yards.

Jamestown's last playoff win was the 33-7 state final victory over New Rochelle in 2000. Jamestown lost in the sectional quarterfinals in 2008 and '09.

First down: What a day for Class A.

Mount Sinai had allowed just 32 points in six games, but No. 20 John Glenn roared to a 52-28 triumph as Ryan Rielly churned out a school-record 506 yards of total offense and had a hand in all seven TDs. Rielly went 12-for-18 with four TDs and 376 yards up top and also carried 14 times for 130 yards and a trio of touchdowns.

"It was like being in the school yard," Rielly told Newsday. "I could run if it was open. I could pass it. I was making plays."

Also on Long Island, No. 10 Garden City downed No. 24 Wantagh 31-14 behind Stephen Jahelka's 81 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries on offense and nine tackles at linebacker.

Defense carried two-time state champion Sweet Home to a 36-12 victory vs. Lafayette to run the Panthers' winning streak to 34. Sweet Home sacked the QB four times, held Lafayette to minus-35 rushing yards, forced four fumbles and Kyle Luckey returned an interception 85 yards for a TD.

Also in Section 6, Williamsville East scored with :48 left to rally past Iroquois 28-27. Matt McIntosh scored on a 1-yard QB dive to cap the game-winning drive on the 10th play after East recovered a squib kick at the 50-yard line.

Section 5's best story of the season rolls on. No. 22 Wayne beat East Irondequoit 15-13 as Cory MacNamara picked off three passes to run his season total to 10 and also recovered a fumble in the Eagles first sectional win in their 13-year history.

Wayne forced seven turnovers. MacNamara returned one of his picks 30 yards for a TD and also kicked a 30-yard field goal.

Canandaigua blanked Honeoye Falls-Lima 34-0 as Derik Peters caught a 69-yard TD pass and ran 20 times for 196 yards and four touchdowns before halftime. Canandaigua held HF-L to minus-27 rushing yards.

Section 1's big game last week saw Rye rip Harrison's heart out with a dramatic victory in the final 15 seconds. So what happened this weekend? Rye lost to Somers on Friday, and No. 14 Harrison topped No. 17 John Jay Cross River 17-13.

JJCR drove 80 yards to a score late in the game with the help of penalties to cut the deficit to four points. But after getting the ball back with 1:15 to go and completing four straight passes to reach midfield, Hime Rraci (274 passing yards, two TDs) was picked off by Steven Deleo with :40 to go to end the threat.

Tanner Knox (16 carries, 122 yards) and Stephen Ricciardi (11 carries, 128 yards) shouldered the offensive load for Harrison.

Also in Section 1, No. 21 Horace Greeley KO'd No. 19 Nyack 21-7 as Justin Ciero threw for 116 yards and a TD and carried 15 times for 91 yards. His one-yard carry capped a 76-yard march in seven plays to open the game.

Second down: The day's most notable Class B action saw Hudson Falls dominate Hudson 48-14 in the Section 2 quarterfinals by blocking two punts and forcing three turnovers to set up four TDs.

Tailbacks Dakota Drake, Artem Trerise and Aaron Dudley combined for 36 carries, 253 yards and three TDs, and QB Shane Colvin ran for one score and passed for two. Drake also racked up an interception and a fumble recovery.

In Section 3, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill beat Homer 35-20 as Tyler Mautner completed 18 of 28 passes for 278 yards and four touchdowns. Running back Matt Sliker caught seven passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for 108 yards.    For the season, Mautner is 80-for-107 for 1,578 yards.

Third down: In regular-season Class C action, No. 2 Chenango Forks put up the most staggering stat of the weekend by running for a school-record 639 yards to beat Unadilla Valley-Edmeston 67-15.

Jimmy Miller led the winners with 13 carries for 133 yards and three touchdowns. Ryan Lamond ran just five times but picked up 122 yards and scored twice. Casey LaNave added two TDs and 130 yards on five attempts.

The Blue Devils ran 48 times and scored 10 touchdowns.

Fourth down: In Class D, No. 3 Dundee avoided disaster against Batavia Notre Dame as Joe Tortolon scored on an 18-yard reverse with :31 left to secure a 23-21 win.

After Dundee's Katie Zebroski made a 24-yard field goal in the third quarter, the Fighting Irish pulled ahead on two Tom Whelehan TD throws late in the fourth quarter.

No. 7 Dolgeville wasn't as fortunate.

Weedsport rushed for 301 yards and gained 421 overall, then stuffed a Dolgeville conversion run late in the game to earn a 28-27 road victory.

Dolgeville's Ray Ruggerio scored on a 45-yard run with under 4:00 to play, but Michael Barnes was stopped on the two-point attempt by Weedsport linebacker Collin Dillabough.

“We would never kick in that situation,” Dolgeville coach Chris Connolly told The Citizen. “Not in this town. I wouldn’t put that game on one kid’s foot. So it was never a question. And anyone who knows me knows that that’s true.”

Weedsport, which got 38 carries for 205 yards from sophomore Will Wittmer, took a 14-7 lead in the second quarter after a 17-play, 99-yard drive that ate up 7:19. Dolgeville ran just nine offensive plays in the first half.

Quick kicks: Canisius edged Ohio's Walsh Jesuit 47-44 as Denzel Benton caught a 15-yard TD to cap a 92-yard drive after safety Travis Eman recovered a fourth-quarter fumble. At quarterback, Eman was 17 of 25 for 371 yards and four TDs. He also ran for 66 yards for the Crusaders, who dressed just 27 players because of the ACT exam.

Class AA No. 2 St. Anthony's raced to a 17-0 lead through one quarter and beat Holy Trinity 38-13. QB Charlie Raffa directed the option attack to 424 yards, rolling 40 yards himself to the end zone in the second quarter to make it 24-0.

Backs Dariyan Riley (133 yards on 17 carries and one touchdown) and Brian Sherlock (123 yards on six carries and one touchdown) also contributed to coach Rich Reichert's 197th career win.

The Friars, who have defeated Holy Trinity 17 straight times since 1992, racked up seven sacks in the first half. Bryan Rhodes had three sacks and a fumble recovery in the final tune-up for next Saturday's game at No. 25 Iona Prep.

Class AA No. 20 Newfield blanked Smithtown East 31-0 as senior Shervon Barthelmy rushed 22 times for a career-high 303 yards and scored three TDs. Barthelmy also scored on a 26-yard screen pass in the first quarter.

The stat sheet: Geneseo won a 68-36 slugfest over Barker behind Xavier Copeland, who completed 10 of 14 attempts for 278 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 10 times for 216 yards and four more scores.

Spring Valley beat Hendrick Hudson 20-6 as Shaquille Gould completed 19 of 28 passes for 277 yards and three touchdowns.

Warwick quarterback John Garcia went 8-for-15 for 278 yards and three touchdowns to beat Goshen 59-27. Nick Race added three carries for 104 yards for Warwick.

Milbrook's 41-0 rout of Eldred was called off at halftime because Eldred ran short of healthy players. Jimmy Ross had three rushes for 160 yards and two touchdowns, a 53-yard punt return for a TD and a 46-yard scoring catch.

Sewanhaka had three 100-yard rushers for the second week in a row and beat Manhasset 46-21. Brian Wint had five touchdowns and 201 yards on just 11 carries.

Brandon Abbott rushed 12 times for 132 yards and two TDs and also added three sacks for Clarke in a 28-8 win against Friends Academy.

Preshod McCoy ran for 271 yards and three North Babylon TDs to edge Riverhead 22-20. McCoy ran for 199 yards in the third quarter.

Middletown's Vincent Mortellaro threw for 319 yards and four touchdowns, including three to WR Jalon White, in a 37-14 win over Port Jervis. Middletown leads the all-time series, which started in 1897, 69-56-7 despite Port Jervis' 12-out-of-14 run entering yesterday's renewal.

Dylan Bordonaro rushed 26 times for 261 yards to lead Elba/Byron-Bergen over South Seneca 23-7.

Rutgers recruit Quentin Gause of Bishop Kearney scored on four rushes, a 45-yard fumble recovery and a 60-yard punt return to beat Mynderse 44-0.
