Football two-minute read: Games of Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010
Kicking off: Oh-ver and oh-ver and oh-ver again.

Peru and Plattsburgh played four scoreless quarters of football yesterday and then six rounds of additional offensive futility before host Peru crossed the goal line in the seventh overtime for a 6-0 victory in the Northern Football Conference.

Junior running back Alex Cederstrom's 8-yard run accounted for the day's only points as Peru extended to 33 years its unbeaten streak vs. Plattsburgh.

Cederstrom led all rushers with 52 yards on 14 carries on a day in which Peru totaled just 131 yards of offense and Plattsburgh had 100.

Peru was stymied on a fake field goal attempt in the second overtime and fumbled the ball away in the third OT. The Indians also threw an interception and missed a field goal in overtime.

Plattsburgh turned the ball over on downs after reaching the 1-yard line in the third OT and also missed a field goal, threw two interceptions and surrendered a fumble.

After Plattsburgh turned the ball over on downs in the seventh OT, Peru showed an I-formation for the first time this season, and Cederstrom banged the ball in on his third carry.

First down: Rye and Harrison never take their annual game casually. Yesterday's clash was of the epic variety that likely will take their rivalry to new levels for years to come.

Rye went on a 14-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 3-yard touchdown pass from Connor Eck to lanky receiver Brian Pickup, who wrestled the ball away from a defender with 15 seconds to play. Eck then ran in a two-point conversion for a 21-20 victory -- their eighth straight in a series that goes back 80 games.

"I can't summarize this," Eck told The Journal News. "It is nuts."

Harrison, ranked fifth in Class A by the New York State Sportswriters Association, had taken a 14-7 lead on two Tanner Knox TDs. No. 12 Rye drove 13 plays and 77 yards on its first possession after halftime to cut it to 14-13 on Eck's 1-yard run, but the extra point was blocked.

Harrison scored on a halfback-option throw of 37 yards from Charlie Drago to James Tirella midway through the fourth quarter to set the stage for Rye's winning drive.

After the TD to cut the deficit to 20-19, Rye coach Dino Garr barely hesitated to put the ball in the hands of Eck -- and interesting choice since the QB had 10 stitches removed from his throwing hand on Wednesday.

"I don't think he threw as well as he could, but he's a winner," Garr told the paper. "He's just a great leader. That's why we went with him."

Second down: Section 1 Class A remains as nutty as ever, with No. 18 Poughkeepsie losing to John Jay Cross River and No. 20 Roosevelt stumbling against Eastchester 33-25.

Consequently, Poughkeepsie and JJCR are 5-1 in the North League; Nyack, Rye, and Harrison are sitting at 5-1 in the South; even the non-playoff West development league couldb't go unscathed as Tappan Zee and Pearl River went 5-1,

Hime Rraci threw a TD strike to Jake Weil with under a minute to go in JJCR's 24-22 win.

Eastchester prevailed over Roosevelt 33-25 only after Tom Cirillo picked off a pass in the final minute. Rob Carinci (152 rushing yards) scored three touchdowns, including a 55-yard carry in the fourth quarter.

Third down: Senior tailback J.J. Rodriguez ran 19 times for 146 yards and the game's first TD to lift No. 14 Onondaga over No. 10 Sandy Creek 20-14 in a Section 3 Class D contest.

Onondaga did all its scoring before halftime, with linebacker Dan Southard returning a fumble 7 yards for a 20-7 lead.

"We couldn't move the ball with any real success in the second half, but a win is a win," Onondaga coach Jason Ryan told The Post-Standard. "We know we've got to do a better job sustaining offensive drives when the playoffs start."

Fourth down: Randolph had its way with Moriah in the 2009 NYSPHSAA Class D final despite having to play without outstanding linebacker Tyler Mendell because of a leg injury. If there's a rematch -- and Randolph is right on schedule following its 52-0 demolition of No. 9 Portville -- it could be Moriah that's at the manpower disadvantage.

Tom Ida ran 15 times for 168 yards for the No. 5 Vikings but left with a knee injury in the second quarter of a 40-14 win over Saranac. That development is on top of the fact that Starting tailback Wally Edwards was injured two weeks ago.

Third-stringer Zack DeSimone rushed for a career-high 155 yards and a touchdown, and fullback Nick Gilbo added 77 yards and three TDs.

The Vikings defense finished with two interceptions and five sacks, two by Conner Rodriguez, although Ben Weightman did throw for 217 yards in the loss for Class B Saranac.

Quick kicks: No. 3 Bronxville overcame an early mistake and beat Dobbs Ferry in Section 1 Class C 32-14.

The Broncos, who had outscored their first five opponents by a 255-6 margin, fumbled the ball away on their first play. A short drive and conversion pass putt Dobbs Ferry ahead 8-0.

"That was a wake-up call," Christian Conway told The Journal News after finishing with 103 rushing yards and two TDs in a game in which hulking linemen Elliot Bartsch (shoulder) and Kieran Borcich (ankle) were unavailable.

Dobbs Ferry fumbled deep in its own end on the next possession, and Ryan Hackett scored from a yard out for Bronxville. Then Hackett picked off a Justin Kennedy pass and returned it 55 yards for a 12-8 lead midway through the second quarter. Dillon Mitchell scored on a 1-yard carry late in the third quarter to add to the lead.

The stat sheet: Jimmy Magee piled up 141 yards and three TDs in the first six minutes before getting the rest of the day off for Pawling in a 52-0 rout over Riverside. Magee has 1,025 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns this season. Rocco Esposito -- who hadn't carried yet this season -- rushed 17 times for 127 yards and a touchdown.

Class AA No. 8 Troy, coming off a couple of sluggish efforts, thrashed No. 24 Shaker 34-0 as senior Jordan Canzeri rushed for 283 yards and three touchdowns (covering 26, 36 and 47 yards) -- more than double Shaker's entire offensive output as the Flying Horses rang up their fifth shutout. Two-way star Shatiek Lewis saw very limited action for Troy in his return from an ankle injury suffered two weeks ago.

Junior Chris Trotta replaced injured QB Joe Kirincic in the third quarter and threw the winning 10-yard TD pass to Brian Gilbert in overtime on for Class A No. 5 Seaford in a 14-7 win over Floral Park. The TD throw came on a 4th-and-6 play on the first possession of OT. Justin Buckley rushed 26 times for 104 yards in the win.

North Shore edged Cold Spring Harbor 12-0 as Evan Vandoros carried 22 times for 211 yards and added a sack on defense.

Nate Bellis kicked a 22-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter blocked an extra-point kick with under 2:00 to go as Canandaigua held on to edge Greece Athena 24-23. Derik Peters ran 32 times for 195 yards in the win.

Lewiston-Porter, which opened the season 0-3, qualified for sectionals for the first time since 2004 by beating Newfane 34-30 in overtime on Joe Hill's third touchdown of the day. His effort overshadowed Newfane QB Shawn Seefeldt, who ran for 146 yards, threw for 133 plus two scores and kicked three field goals.

Bishop Timon-St. Jude routed Nichols 42-0 as Ryan Dougherty went 7-for-7 for 228 yards and three TD passes.

Michael Moriarty carried 15 times for 201 yards and Brandon Trager 12 times for 150 as Yorktown beat Mamaroneck 48-27.

Senior Eddie Soto ran 22 times for 298 yards and TDs of 21, 30, 57 and 80 yards as Liberty beat Sullivan West 26-16. Soto is up to 1,050 yards and 21 touchdowns heading into the Section 9 Class C playoffs.

Derelle Hunter torched St. Peter's for 297 rushing yards and four touchdowns as St. John the Baptist earned a 25-13 victory.

All-state QB Ashton Broyld of Class AA No. 7 Rush-Henrietta went 11-for-13 for 211 yards and four TDs as the Royal Comets beat Rochester Wilson 54-0 in the first round of sectionals.

Dominick DeLucia Jr. carried a dozen times for 175 yards and two touchdowns as the No. 25 Panthers beat Edison 41-8 in Class AA.

Travis Houpe ran 19 times for 236 yards and two touchdowns for Bellport in a 36-12 win over Smithtown East. Bellport rushed for 366 yards in the game.

Tyler Heuer went 9-of-16 for 169 yards and four TD passes for Oceanside to breeze past Plainview JFK 43-14. Nick Sherry led the rushing attack with seven carries for 122 yards and two touchdowns.
