Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010: Center Moriches wins Long Island soccer showdown
Leading off today: Sal Spitaleri scored with 24 seconds left in the second overtime to lead No. 12 Center Moriches, the defending NYSPHSAA Class B champion, past No. 2 Mattituck in a clash of state-ranked boys soccer teams yesterday.

Both clubs are 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the Suffolk County League VII after splitting their season series. Mattituck led 2-0 at halftime on goals from Kevin Reyer and Andres Aldaz.

"We said at halftime that 2-0 is the worst lead in soccer because there's some complacency involved," Center Moriches coach Chris O'Brien told Newsday. "You think you can relax a little bit."

Midway through the second half, Center Moriches got goals four minutes apart from James Whelan and Brian Alifano.

400th win for Harwood: Arkport coach Melody Harwood picked up career soccer victory No. 400 with a 4-0 win at home against Jasper-Troupsburg.

Emily Wolf arched a deep shot over the J-T goalie nine minutes in. Allison Kraft headed in a corner kick early in the second half, and Amanda Swarts tallied five minutes later to put the game out of reach.

“We just really didn’t talk about (the milestone) today," Harwood told The Evening Tribune/ "At halftime I finally said, ‘OK, you can say 400.’ We just didn’t talk about it. It was just about this game, and that’s all it was about tonight.”

Including an 11-0-3 mark this fall, Harwood is 400-104-18 in her 25th season. Arkport's state Class D championship last fall was her second in five years, and Harwood doesn't sound ready to leave before taking aim at the 465 wins by retired Tamarac coach Craig Gilbert.

“I’ve had four daughters go through this program and my youngest (Jordan) is a senior this year," she said. "I think people anticipated, ‘Oh, she might stop.’ But as long as I’m having fun and the kids are having fun with me, I don’t plan on going anywhere unless they kick me out."

CBA finding its stride: Quick goals in the opening 10 minutes by Taylor Gait and freshman Eva Gordon started Syracuse CBA on its way to a 5-1 victory over Jamesville-DeWitt in girls soccer. Gordon finished with three goals to run her season total to nine.

J-D is ranked eighth in Class A by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

CBA plays Aquinas tonight in Rochester.

Extra points: The Pearl River girls won their division at the Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic in Orlando, Fla., with 33 points as No. 2 Erica Guerin led a pack of seven Pirates in the top 15.
