Kicking off: Offense, defense and special teams carried No. 22
Fayetteville-Manlius past No. 11 Syracuse Corcoran 21-13 last night in Section 3 Class AA action.
Senior Matt Moro capped a 68-yard drive with a 4-yard TD run early in the second period, and the Hornet defense did not allow a first down in the quarter. F-M took a 14-7 lead on John Wittig’s 23-yard pass to Louis Muraco with 2:09 left in the half.
Corcoran opened the second half with a TD on Delvon Adams’ 8-yard run, but the F-M defense stuffed the run attempt for the two-point conversion.
On special teams, F-M recovered a fumble punt at the Corcoran 27 early in the fourth quarter. Moro scored on a 4-yard run five plays later.
First down: Quarterback Ryan Spelman ran for three touchdowns and passed for another in Class AA No. 1 Monroe-Woodbury's 34-6 victory over Pine Bush. He ran for scores of 17, 25 and 32 yards and threw to Tony Patrignelli on a TD pass covering 25 yards.
THe Crusaders were without running back Trevor Officer, who was averaging 145.2 yards a game. He is expected to return from an ankle injury next week, The Times Herald-Record reported.
Second down: The magical season continues for Wayne, which improved to 6-0 with a 20-2 victory over Class B No. 15 Midlakes.
Junior QB Connor Hollenbeck went 7-for-15 with 168 yards and two TDs. Danny Vice made four catches for 108 yards for the Eagles.
On defense, Patrick Murray had two fumble recoveries and a blocked punt, and Corey McNamara registered his sixth interception of the season.
Halftime: On a night on which No. 10 Shenendehowa was upset in Section 2 action, Class AA No. 5 Troy had a close call before beating Niskayuna 35-28 in overtime.
Jordan Canzeri (23 carries, 145 yards), who brought back the game's opening kickoff 90 yards for a TD, scored on a 20-yard run on Troy’s first play of overtime, and Stephaun Grinage wrapped up the win with an interception on the second play of Nisky's subsequent possession.
Senior quarterback Brian Marsh rushed for two TDs for the Flying Horses, who were without star running back/linebacker Shatiek Lewis (ankle injury).
Nisky QB Kyle Bayly finished 20-for-37 for 336 yards and a TD. Nick Shuler caught seven passes for 163 yards.
Shen's loss came by a 37-13 margin to Guilderland.
Third down: Senior Tyler Heuer was the star as No. 17 Oceanside dominated No. 15 Farmingdale 41-17 in Nassau County Class AA action to snap an 18-game losing streak dating to 1977 in the series. The senior QB threw for three TDs and dashed in for two more.
The Dalers built a 14-0 lead as Heur struggles with a 3-for-9 start. Early in the second half, he capped a 29-yard drive after a fumble recovery with a 1-yard quick-in to Gene Garay (seven catches, 121 yards). On the next possession, Oceanside drove 80 yards in eight plays to a 2-yard run by Nick Sherry (16 carries, 110 yards) for a 27-17 lead.
The Sailors recovered the ensuing onside kick and drove five plays and 47 yards, with Phil Ragona (seven catches, 102 yards) reeling in a 22-yard TD pass.
Heuer finished 20-for-32 for 259 yards and picked up 48 yards rushing in the follow-up to his six TD throws last week vs. East Meadow.
Fourth down: Tyler Lawlor threw four of his five TD passes to receiver Joe White -- covering 31, 32, 35 and 45 yards -- as Class A No. 17 Cornwall recovered from last week's loss with a 49-14 victory against Monticello.
Tyree Smallwood rushed for 204 yards in the win, which was somewhat overshadowed by Cornwall going for consecutive two-point conversions while comfortably ahead in the fourth quarter."
"You can ask, two-point conversion? Hell, yeah, I'm going for a two-point conversion because our kicker isn't getting it done," Cornwall coach Marcus Hughes told The Times Herald-Record, perhaps referring to a missed extra point in the 7-6 loss to Wallkill.
The first of the two-point conversions came was a 32-14 lead with 5:54 to go. Hughes said an apparent onside kick late in the game was the result of a mis-struck ball.
