Friday, Oct. 8, 2010: New Jersey state organization may lose its authority
Leading off today: New Jersey high school sports could come under new leadership in the very near future as politicians work out a compromise over the embattled NJSIAA, NorthJersey.com reported today.

The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association has been under fire for what a state government committee termed lavish spending and "primitive" accounting practices.

"Everybody is interested in coming up with a solution that’s in the best interests of the student-athletes," said state Sen. Richard Codey, who has been hammered out details with Assemblyman John Burzichelli. It was Burzichelli who introduced the bill seeking to strip the NJSIAA of oversight of high school sports in favor of the State School Boards Association under the direction of the commissioner of education. Codey would prefer to appoint an outside monitor to oversee financial reforms while keeping the association intact.

Burzichelli has assailed the NJSIAA for several years over its finances in general and ticket prices to state tournaments.

Scoring champ: Whitesville senior Stephany Ellison scored twice in a 2-1 girls soccer victory over Cuba-Rushford yesterday, making her the all-time leader in Section 5.

"I was nervous at the beginning of the game,” the sixth-year varsity player told the Wellsville Daily Reporter. "I don’t know why, but I was. I mean, we’ve got quite a few games left.”

Her first goal broke the record set by Casandra Mills of Fillmore in 2001.

Speaking of scoring, Lia Bellizzi's two goals Tuesday made her the career points leader at Rye with 202, surpassing the mark of Alexandra Rimmer.

"Quite honestly, she had no idea she was breaking the record," coach Rich Savage told The Journal News. "I kept it from her to keep the pressure off of her and let her concentrate on just being a player."

Rye has moved up to No. 1 in the country according to ESPN Rise after Saturday's upset of previous No. 1 Immaculate Heart Academy from New Jersey.

Spread thin: With Saratoga Catholic having had to drop the sport at the varsity level over the summer, The Post-Star in Glens Falls took a look this week at some Section 2 teams with very small football rosters.

Fort Edward, Warrensburg and Class C Lake George all started this season with fewer than two dozen

varsity players, not very far above the state-mandated minimum of 16 for games. Lake George dropped its JVs, leaving its freshmen on the modified and giving the varsity 21.

And South Glens Falls, a Class A school, had to drop its JV program in midseason in order to beef up the varsity.

Lake George and Warrensburg came up with a unique solution to low numbers. They hold a combined practice every Wednesday. "We're down to 19 or 20 guys; that's not enough for a full look," Burghers coach Mike Leonbruno told the paper.

By the way, Alexandria Bay will forfeit the remaining two games on its Section 3 schedule due to a shortage of players.

Extra points: Utica Proctor point guard Brianna Kiesel will continue her basketball career at Pittsburgh in the Big East next season after fielding another of offers. Kiesel averaged 22.7 points as a freshman and 22.5 as a soph before breaking her left wrist early in her junior season. . . . Last Friday’s Cooperstown at Port Byron football game was ruled a “no contest” after no officials showed up in Port Byron. The game will not be rescheduled.
