NYSSWA All-State plaques

Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010: East Hampton hoops coach Petrie retires at 78
Leading off today: East Hampton boys basketball coach Ed Petrie has retired after a half-century career on the bench during which he won a NYSPHSAA-record 754 games, The East Hampton Star reported.

Petrie, 78, a New York State Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, compiled a 754-258 record. Jack Curran of Archbishop Molloy is the overall state leader with 924 wins (and climbing). Petrie eclipsed Jack Halloran of Whitney Point (630) in 2004 for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association record.

Petrie, who grew up in Rye, coached at Pierson for a decade before arriving at East Hampton in 1969.

he told the paper that he has recommended to the school board that Bill McKee be named as his replacement, though the board did not take up the matter at Tuesday's meeting. McKee has been an assistant to Petrie since 1988.

With Bill Merna having retired from Ogdensburg in the spring with 599 victories, Rod Chando becomes the NYSPHSAA's active leader with 591 victories, followed by Mike Rapone at Batavia Notre Dame at 546.

Kicking up a storm: Stephany Ellison did more than register her seventh hat trick of the season Tuesday vs. Fillmore in a 3-3 girls soccer tie. The Whitesville senior knocked home the 178th goal of her amazing career to equal the Section 5 record.

She'll pursue sole possession of the mark today vs. Cuba-Rushford in the opening round of a tournament at Scio. Cassandra Mills of Fillmore set the sectional record in a career that concluded in 2000. Kaitlin Robbins of Watertown Immaculate Heart Central set the state mark of 208 goals in 2007.

Ellison has 28 goals and seven assists in the Jays' 7-1-2 start to the season.

“She’s completely the real deal and everybody knows it,” Fillmore coach Jon Beardsley told the Wellsville Daily Reporter..

The streak lives ... barely: It was close, but Tully ran to its 99th straight dual-meet victory since 1996 in boys cross country yesterday by beating LaFayette 27-30.

LaFayette junior Tom Sargent grabbed individual honors in 18:25, but junior Alex Mirra (18:45) helped the Black Knights take four of the next six places.

“We dodged a bullet today,” coach Jim Paccia told The Post-Standard.

Suspensions: Ten Churchville-Chili varsity football players have been hit with five-day suspensions for their roles in a fight mostly involving former Saints students after their game Friday night, WHEC-TV reported.

School district officials said charges are pending against the former students for trespassing.

Big football weekend: You know football season is in high gear when rivalry games like Caledonia-Mumford vs. LeRoy and Walton vs. Delhi scarcely rate a mention in a review of the weekend schedule.

In Class C alone, the four top teams in the state are all taking on teams that are also ranked by the New York State Sportswriters Association: It'll be No. 1 Southwestern vs. No. 7 Fredonia, No. 2 Chenango Forks vs. No. 9 Sidney, No. 3 Bronxville vs. No. 16 Hastings and No. 4 Hoosick Falls vs. No. 17 Fonda-Fultonville.

In Class AA, No. 6 New Rochelle plays No. 9 White Plains in another of the 14 head-to-head battles

between ranked New York teams. The game between Syracuse Corcoran and Fayetteville-Manlius features a pair of Section III unbeatens, and the Class A contest between Poughkeepsie and Horace Greeley will also knock someone from the rank of the unbeatens.

You can see the full list of games involving ranked teams on the RoadToSyracuse.com schedules/results page.

The tradition continues: Former Somers all-American JoJo Marasco will be the next player to wear the fabled No. 22 men's lacrosse jersey at Syracuse University, LaxLessons.com reported.

The number gained widespread attention when Gary Gait wore it. He was followed by the likes of Charlie Lockwood, brothers Casey, Ryan and Mike Powell and most recently Cody Jamieson.

With Jamieson still on the roster last season, Marasco wore No. 1 as a freshman.

Lights out: According to The Advance, the New York City Department of Education is changing the way it handles after-school activities, putting schools on the hook for paying custodial costs for some games played on campus at night or on weekends.

Schools will not have to pick up the tab on PSAL contests next year, but non-leaguers may pushed up to afternoon starting times to avoid the added expense. The new policy also requires permits when parts of the school are opened. One example the paper cited required Tottenville to file for one permit for the football team to gather at the school Saturday morning before its trip to Sheepshead Bay and another for when it returned after the game to change and put away its equipment.

Honoring a Hornell hero: The Hornell football team will formally retire the No. 56 jersey of Zach Smith during a halftime ceremony Friday.

Smith, a 19-year-old lance corporal, died in combat in January while serving with the Marine Corps in Afghanistan, becoming the first casualty of war for the Hornell area since Vietnam. He was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart.

“Zach was one of the greatest kids that’s ever been around,” Red Raiders coach and AD Gene Mastin said. “It’s going to a special night for everyone here because he was special, special in every way — special as a football player, special as a student and just a great kid in the community."
