Leading off today: Senior
Brittany Marshall did all of Malone's scoring in a 4-1 victory over Norwood-Norfolk yesterday to reach 100 goals in her girls soccer career.
Marshall scored once in the first half and another goal early in the second for the Huskies. She added two more goals in the final seven minutes to reach the century mark.
Cross country: Staten Island's The Advance reports that the turnout at the Bowdoin Invitational cross country meet last weekend was down substantially from a year ago.
Part of that should be attributed to the fact that many schools opted for the Green Mountain Lake Cross Country Invitational at Lakeside Park in Pawling, which will be the site of the New York State Public High School Athletic
Association meet in November. Still, the Bowdoin meet was being held on the course that hosts the Federation meet as well as the Nike Eastern Regional qualifier.
That should have been enough to attract more teams, but that wasn't the case as only 36 teams competed.
This week's big meet is the McQuaid Invitation in Rochester. Early indications are that the day's 25 varsity and sub-varsity races will once again draw heavily from New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Ontario. The gem of the day should be the boys seeded varsity AA race, which will have a smattering of out-of--state entries and deep lists of New York's best.
Eight teams ranked in Class A by the New York State Sportswriters Association -- No. 1 Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, No. 2 Vestal, No. 3 McQuaid, No. 5 Pittsford Sutherland, No. 8 Pittsford Mendon, No. 10 Brighton, No. 11 Honeoye Falls-Lima and No. 20 Grand Island -- are in the field. On top of that, three top Class B squads -- No. 1 East Aurora, No. 2 Marcellus and No. 5 Wayne -- are entered.
Don't bet against that one coming down to someone's No. 5 runner picking off stragglers in an all-out dash to the chute in the 600-meter homestretch.
The girls seeded varsity AA is also well-stocked with No. 3 Mendon, No. 4 Burnt Hills, No. 6 Canandaigua and Ho. 7 HF-Lima from Class A plus No. 1 East Aurora and No. 7 Marcellus from Class B.
Expectations: The ArmoryTrack.com site had an interesting feature on Cornwall senior Aisling Cuffe, who has established herself as one of the finest distance runners in the country.
Between training, competing and recruiting visits (to Duke and Villanova thus far), she's constantly on the move, with the Great American Festival in Cary, N.C., this weekend next on the schedule.
"It’s been crazy,” Cuffe said. “You meet so many people. You can’t even remember all their names. It’s hard having on my Hi-my-name-is-Aisling-Cuffe face all the time. I wish I had a name tag.”
