Monday, Sept. 27, 2010: Boys & Girls assistant sacked after mooning incident
Leading off today: A Boys & Girls first-year assistant football coach who mooned opposing fans during a weekend game has been fired, school officials told The New York Daily News.

William Miller was dumped for flashing his backside after the 'Roos lost to Campus Magnet on Saturday. Miller is not a school employee and was not paid, Margie Feinberg, a spokeswoman for the city Department of Education, told the paper.

The tushing moment came at the somewhat chaotic end of Boys & Girls' 16-6 loss at Campus Magnet after Kangaroos coaches became embroiled in an argument with game officials over whether a two-point conversion by Campus Magnet with 3:49 to play was successful.

No players were involved in the post-game histrionics.

Sledge's selection: Iowa State has dipped into metro New York to land its point guard of the future.

Five-foot-9 Tavon Sledge, who helped Half Hollow Hills West to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class AA final last March in Glens Falls, made the commitment today to attend next fall, Adam Zagoria reported.

Sledge has also been considering St. John’s and UTEP recently.

He averaged 17.8 points a game as a junior and was a second-team all-state pick by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

Sledge's counterpart at point guard in the state final also announced his college decision. Galal Cancer of Albany CBA will attend Cornell next fall, FOX 23 Sports reported this afternoon.

Cancer, a seventh-team all-stater, averaged 10.2 points as a junior. The 6-2 standout was also considering SUNY Albany.

SV star picks West Point: Sauquoit Valley two-way lineman David Evans has accepted Army coach Richard Ellerson's offer to play football for West Point next fall, The Observer-Dispatch reported last night.

“It really came down to the people there,” Evans told the paper. "Obviously, it’s a great education, top notch, and you get to serve your country, too."

The 6-foot-3, 270-pound senior is expected to fit in at offensive tackle. Navy, Connecticut, Colgate, Syracuse, Rutgers and most of the Ivy League has also expressed interest in Evans, who is the 15th major-college commitment of the current New York senior class. (See list here)

On the move: The New York Post reported that highly regarded sophomore receiver Kendall "Speedy" Thomas resurfaced today at Thomas Jefferson, where his brother plays wideout, after being expelled from Xaverian late last week.

Thomas was asked to leave for an incident that occurred during detention, sources told the paper. Thomas’ mother, Diedra Best-McLean, declined to comment, and Xaverian officials were unavailable for comment, the paper reported.

Thomas scored on a 49-yard punt return and an 86-yard kickoff return in the opener vs. St. Peter's and made six catches for 102 yards at Chaminade in his second game.

Sacked: Watervliet lost more than a football game over the weekend at Tamarac. The Cannoneers also lost

numerous personal items when thieves broke into their locker room during the 13-12 loss, The Times Union reported.

Trooper Maureen Tuffey said New York State Police were investigating the theft of iPods, cell phones and wallets. She did not know how many lockers were broken into, the paper reported.

"We would like to express our deep regrets to the athletes of Watervliet High School," Tamarac Principal Rich Pogue said in a statement. "We will do everything we can to assist State Police in their investigation to hopefully bring resolution to this unfortunate incident."

Boys soccer: Look for Clarence to ascend to No. 1 in the state in Class AA following its 2-0 win over highly regarded Lancaster last week on goals by Tyler Funk and Yoni Guardardo to improve the squad's record to 8-0-1.

Top-ranked Brentwood suffered a 1-0 loss at Commack last week and followed up with a 1-1 tie over the weekend vs. Sachem East after falling behind in the first half.

Monroe-Woodbury is 5-0-1 and still unscored upon after wins late last week by identical scores of 2-0 vs. Pine Bush and New Rochelle. Dylan Williams scored twice and Ryan Roethel totaled seven saves.

Girls soccer: Grand Island, ranked sixth in Class A had a nice weekend, beating Lockport 1-0 in overtime on Friday and then No. 3 Rochester Mercy by the same score on the road on Saturday.

Jenna Raepple scored her ninth goal of the season in the fifth minute of OT vs. Lockport following a Danielle Wegrzyn took a free kick. Jeannie Taylor scored vs. Mercy, and junior Stephanie Senn turned in a 19-save shutout.

   Grand Island is 8-0.

Pay per view: The Times Herald-Record in Middletown put its main website as well as that of its Varsity845.com high school sports site behind a partial pay wall last week in a move that other small papers will be watching with great interest.

The sites now have three levels of access. Visitors who stumble in, likely through a search-engine result link, can read three articles without registering. Occasional users can register for access to up to 10 articles per month. Higher-volume users can subscribe for $4.13 per week to restore the unlimited access they previously enjoyed.

Extra points: The sprained ankle that benched V-V-S quarterback Tyler Mautner during overtime in the 50-44 loss to Cazenovia on Saturday probably won't be enough to sideline him this weekend, The Observer-Dispatch reported. Mautner threw for a school-record 439 yards and three touchdowns in the loss, bringing his four-game totals to 1,178 yards and 14 touchdowns on 47-for-68 accuracy.

Injured Staten Island Curtis running back Shaquan Coles dressed for the first time but did not play last weekend vs. Thomas Jefferson. Coles, who ran for 1,798 yards and 24 TDs as a junior, could play this week as he continues his recovery from a torn meniscus suffered during the offseason.
