Friday, Nov. 6, 2009: Two 'AA' football finalists to be minus key players
Leading off today: Unbeaten Baldwinsville, ranked sixth in Class AA by the NYSSWA, will be without starting quarterback Niko Manning when it faces Syracuse CBA in the Section 3 Class AA football final tomorrow at the Carrier Dome.

Manning was injured while making a play on defense during Friday's 22-15 semifinal victory over Corcoran, pressing junior Casey Colligan into action, The Post-Standard reported.

Colligan, went 2-for-2 for 33 yards and a touchdown for the Bees in the come-from-behind victory. Going into the game, Colligan had attempted only two passes this season.

“He can run the show,” coach Carl Sanfilippo said. "He’s pretty comfortable, as everybody saw the other night."

Baldwinsville is a run-oriented team, with Manning attempting only 55 throws in nine games. All-state tailback Malik Burks has rushed for more than 2,200 yards this season.

Also out of action this week will be Lancaster senior defensive back Kevin Schwach, who has made eight interceptions. He broke an arm against Lockport on Friday and underwent surgery that will keep him off the field when the Redskins meet North Tonawanda for the Section 6 Class AA championship.

Disciplinary action: Hampton Bays started the season with six victories and takes a 7-1 mark in the Section 11 Division IV quarterfinals tomorrow, but the odds of advancing do not look promising. Newsday reported that a Halloween prank iresulted in the suspension of nine players for Saturday’s game at Mount Sinai.

Tough ending: One of the rarest calls in a soccer -- awarding a penalty kick in overtime -- paved the way for Glens Falls in a 2-1 victory over South Glens Falls yesterday in the Section 2 Class A boys soccer semifinals ay Queensbury High.

Referees awarded Michael Rankin-Byrne a penalty kick in the second sudden-death following a foul just inside the penalty area. Rankin-Byrne converted the kick to set up a

final against Mohonasen, a 1-0 overtime winner over Ichabod Crane.

""It’s hard to lose any game on a penalty kick, but when you’re in a championship tournament, it’s very difficult to lose a game that way," South Glens Falls coach Travis Birkholz told The Times Union.

'11 ESGs to Rochester: The Empire State Summer Games will return to Rochester in 2011, officials announced yesterday.

State budget issues forced cancellation of the 2009 event, but the ESGs are scheduled to resume next summer in Buffalo. Scheduling the event in Western New York cities in consecutive years is expected to help the state's Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation recruit sponsors for two-year commitments.

The 2011 Games are scheduled for July 27-31 in Rochester, which previously hosted in 1993, 1998 and 2006.

Extra points: Irondequoit may play Canandaigua for the Section 5 Class AA girls volleyball championship minus senior hitter Mary Cushman, the 2008 Gatorade state player of the year, the Democrat and Chronicle reported. Cushman sprained her right ankle Tuesday against Hilton.
