Monday, Nov. 2, 2009: Gates Chili, Webster Schroeder gain revenge
Leading off today: Gates Chili and Webster Schroeder each got off to 1-2 starts on the football field this season. Now they're headed to the Section 5 Class AA championship game, courtesy of victories Sunday in rematches.

Levester Tucker carried 37 times for 150 yards and scored on a 3-yard run midway through the fourth quarter as Gates Chili beat No. 6 Hilton in the postseason for the second straight year, this time by a 21-14 score. Hilton had won their Week 3 confrontation 27-26 in triple overtime.

"It was just hard work," Spartans quarterback Malcolm Frazier told the Democrat and Chronicle. "We worked too hard to give (the season) up."

In the nightcap, Webster Schroeder edged No. 9 Rush-Henrietta 24-19 as Nick DiMartino's 2-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter gave the Warriors breathing room. DiMartino transferred from Gates Chili over the summer and will face his former teammates Saturday for a berth in the NYSPHSAA quarterfinals.

R-H defeated the Warriors 28-21 in the 2009 opener.

You again? Ithaca's Lucy Mehrabyan qualified for her sixth straight NYSPHSAA tennis tournament with a 6-0, 6-3 singles victory over sister Mane Mehrabyan on Saturday. Mehrabyan has bowed out in the round of 16 at the last two state tournaments.

Chatham scores an upset: Regina Behn scored the only goal six minutes into the second half as eighth-seeded Chatham ousted top-seeded Hoosick Falls 1-0 from the Section 2 Class CC quarterfinals in girls soccer Saturday.

Britany Lossow stopped 20 shots to earn the shutout vs. Hoosick Falls, No. 4 in the NYSSWA Class C rankings.

and has a 7-9-2 record, but the Lancers are in the Section 6 Class A boys soccer semifinals.

Frankie Valente's goal with 12 minutes left broke a tie and lifted Lew-Port over fourth-seeded Iroquois.

"We're finally healthy. We've been injured all season and my keeper (Austin Crossley) is starting to play well," coach Sam Ricotta told The Buffalo News.

Next for Lew-Port is a Tuesday semifinal vs. Williamsville South, the No. 4 team in the state. Zack Schwartz scored 6:30 into the first half as Williamsville South edged Williamsville East 1-0 in another Saturday quarterfinal.

Extra points: Ryan McLaughlin made the most of a consolation bracket game, going 16-for-23 for 409 yards and four TDs as Albertus Magnus beat Lincoln Hall 41-34. The effort set Section 1 records for yards in a game and a season (1,902). The senior threw for 376 yards in the previous weekend's playoff loss to Hastings.
