Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008: Girls all-state soccer team announced
Leading off today: The first of the season's all-state teams is now available as soccer editor Perry Novak of NYSSCOGS, our sister organization, has released the 2008 girls soccer team.

The complete list of honored players can be found here.

The Class AA player of the year is John Jay-East Fishkill senior defender Erin Egan. JJ-EF's Darryl Sullivan and Williamsville North's Doug Kircher were selected co-coaches of the year. Egan is joined on the first team by teammate Jen Mansfield, a senior midfielder on the state championship squad.

In Class A, the player of the year is Lia Bellizzi, a sophomore forward on Rye's NYSPHSAA championship team. Rye's Rich Savage was selected coach of the year.

In Class B, Briarwood junior defender and Buffalo Nichols senior goalkeeper Adele Jackson-Gibson share player of the year recognition. Owen Scully of state-champion Briarwood is the coach of the year.

Marathon and York shared the state Class C championship as well as post-season honors -- players of the year Rachel Parker (Marathon) and Jenna Carson (York), both juniors, and coaches Vic VanVliet of York and Trish Hayes of Marathon. York senior Jessalyn Gates also earned first-team honors.

Marathon and S.S. Seward shared the state Class D title and the top honors -- players of the year Alina Greiser of Seward and Kori Hamm of Edmeston and their respective coaches, Joe DiMattina and Melanie Mumbulo. Forward Jillian Collova joins teammate Greiser on the first team.

The Railsplitters, led by all-state guard Lance Stephenson, a coveted Division I prospect, make their first appearance Dec. 11 on ESPN against Duncanville, Texas and could be shown again 12 days later when ESPNU shows the title game and third-place game of the Bank of America City of Palms Classic tournament, which includes national powers Mater Dei from California, St. Patrick from New Jersey, Duncanville and Wheeler (Ga.).

On Jan. 19, ESPNU has the game between Lincoln and LeFlore (Ala.). Lincoln's final appearance will be Feb. 13 against St. Patrick, this time on ESPN2.

Lincoln is the only New York school scheduled for any of ESPN's 15 games this winter.

Coming up: I'll take a shot at picking the winners of this weekend's New York State Public High School Athletic Association fiitball finals in tomorrow's blog.

Extra points: Cardinal Spellman football coach Joe DiSimone announced his retirement over the weekend following an 8-6 win against Cardinal Hayes in the CHSFL Class A final. His teams played in three title games, winning two, in DiSimone's seven seasons.
