Friday, June 8, 2007: Huntington's 63-game lacrosse winning streak snapped in 2nd overtime
Leading off today: The John Jay Cross River boys lacrosse team picked a fine time to finally win a game on Long Island, putting an end to Huntington's 63-game winning streak Thursday.

Brian Douglass scored with nine seconds to go in the second overtime, carrying John Jay (21-2) to an 11-10 victory in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class B semifinals at Hofstra University.

John Jay (21-2) will play Jamesville-DeWitt in the championship game Saturday at Cicero-North Syracuse. Both of John Jay's losses this season came on Long Island -- 9-6 to Huntington (20-1) and 7-6 to Garden City. The team had never won a game on Long Island until knocking off the state's two-time defending champs.

Spallina off to Adelphi: Highly successful Rocky Point coach Joe Spallina has been named women's lacrosse coach at Adelphi University.

Spallina, a 1996 graduate of Adelphi, inherits a program that has made three NCAA tournament appearances in four years, including championships in 2004 and 2006.

Spallina will remain a physical education instructor at Rocky Point, where he has coached girls lacrosse and soccer. His lacrosse teams have won three consecutive Section 11 championships to cap his 10-year tenure.

One more chance: Newsday's Steven Marcus says Nassau Community College football coach John Anselmo would take enigmatic former North Babylon hero Jason Gwaltney back if the player wanted to take another shot at salvaging his career.

My advice to Anselmo: Be careful, because Gwaltney might just take you up on the offer.

If Gwaltney ever gets his act together, he can go on to have a productive college career and perhaps even play in the Sunday league some day. But let's not lose sight of the fact that the kid has already wasted a bunch of opportunities the last two years.

Personally, I'd rather invest the Father Flanagan effort in a kid who's shown a little more heart and motivation.

101 uses for duct tape: A Setauket junior high gym teacher was arrested Thursday after he wrapped a student's legs with duct tape, causing the teenager to fall and break his arm, Newsday reported.

Matthew Foster, a gym teacher at Paul J. Gelinas Junior High, was charged with endangering the welfare of a minor and third-degree assault, Suffolk County police spokeswoman Laura Weir said.

Foster, 57, chairman of the physical education and health department, was placed on paid leave by district officials. Foster was released on bail and is to appear in court at a later date.

Police said Foster taped the freshman's upper legs together over his gym shorts apparently in response to the student being late to class, police said. In an attempt to remove the tape, the student fell into the bleachers and then to the ground, causing the broken arm, police said.

Extra points: Valley Central athletic director George St. Lawrence will take over the AD's duties at Monroe-Woodbury, replacing the retired Ron Montalto. St. Lawrence has been the AD at Valley Central for eight years. . . . Doug Murphy, an assistant principal at Monticello, will replace the retiring Ken Garry as AD.
