Thursday, June 7, 2007: 'Parade' All-American soccer star ticketed in fatal Penfield crash
Leading off today: Hundreds of motorcyclists rode to a Penfield intersection Wednesday in tribute to Robert Schwind, who was killed there Monday in a collision with a car driven by a Duke-bound girls soccer defender.

Gretchen Miller, 18, an All-Greater Rochester and Parade All-American selection at Our Lady of Mercy, was ticketed for failure to yield to Schwind's motorcycle in connection with the accident, which happened about 9:30 p.m.

Sheriff's Office spokesman Cpl. John Helfer said Schwind, 26, was driving south on Route 250 when Miller, driving north, turned left into parking lot and collided with the motorcycle. Helfer said an investigation continues; the speed of Schwind's motorcycle may have been a factor.

Recruiting tidbits: There was nothing particularly revealing in the story, but The Eagle-Tribune in North Andover, Mass., did an interesting look at some aspects of college recruiting this week.

One often-forgotten part of the equation is that many

college coaches ask their players to vote "yes" or "no" on a prospect after the athlete makes a visit.

That's a double-edged sword for coaches. An influential veteran can try to round up some "no" votes on a recruit who's perceived as a threat to take away playing time but, more often than not, it's a great way to weed out prospects with attitude problems.

Anyway, it's a short read so take a look.

Extra points: The annual Tom Downey Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit Coaches vs. Cancer is coming up Monday, July 23 at Livingston Country Club in Geneseo. It's a great cause in the memory of one of the all-time great gentlemen in Section 5 basketball history. The entry fee is $75 per player and includes lunch before the round, refreshments on the course and cocktails after golf. For more information, contact Chris Metcalf, 122 Main St., Geneseo, NY 14454.
