Tom Doherty's Rockland County Weekly Dandy Dozen
   Editor's note: NYSSWA member Tom Doherty compiles a weekly list of the top 12 teams in Rockland County, regardless of sport, size or sex. Here is the list for the week ending Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010:

1a.) (Honorary Team) Mine Rescue in Chile
Head Foreman, Luis Urzua--Record 33-0

  • Perhaps the greatest lesson in my lifetime of teamwork, courage, mental toughness & perseverance.
  • Hey coaches, cancel practice and have your team watch highlights of this superb story of human spirit.

    1b.) North Rockland Girls Soccer
    Coach Jennifer Czumak--Record 7-2

  • Ranked #35 in the NATION by ESPN Rise
  • NYSSWA/NYSSCOGS Weekly Poll--#9 Class AA
  • Brutal week with tough losses to nationally ranked, Washingtonville (#20) & Rye (#1). We will never penalize teams for going out and seeking top-notch competition
  • Still undefeated in Rockland County

    2.) North Rockland Girls Cross Country
    Coach Brian Diglio--Record 5-1

  • NYSSWA Weekly Poll--#9, Class AA
  • Only Rockland Team (Boys or Girls) to compete in the tough Eastern States Race (finished a solid 6th)

    3.) Pearl River Girls Cross Country
    Coach Dan Doherty--Record 9-0

  • NYSSWA Weekly Poll--#2, Class B
  • "Road Trip" big win at Disney World Classic in Orlando, Florida

    4.) North Rockland Boys Soccer
    Coach Pete McGovern--Record 8-1

  • NYSSWA Weekly Poll--#5 , Class AA
  • Roller Coaster week with huge win over #11 Nationally ranked, Scarsdale and then tough loss to Suffern

    5.) North Rockland Boys Cross Country
    Coach Barry Baloga--Record 6-0

  • NYSSWA Weekly Poll--#6, Class AA
  • Heads into County Meet on Oct. 28 as the solid favorite to repeat their title defense

    6.) Suffern Girls Tennis
    Coach Bobbi Kim --Record 12-0

  • Beat previously undefeated Clarkstown North twice with identical 6-1 scores

    7.) Clarkstown North Football
    Coach Joe Trongone--Record 4-1

  • MSG Varsity Hudson Valley Poll (Sections 1 & 9)--#9
  • Big home game battle tomorrow night with arch-rival Clarkstown South

    8.) Suffern Girls Swimming
    Coach Kirk Skoglund--Record 5-0

  • Rolling along as Rockland's only undefeated swim team!

    9.) North Rockland Girls Volleyball
    Coach Colete Jurman--Record 9-1
  • Look for a classic showdown with Suffern tomorrow with Rockland supremacy on the line

    10.) Nanuet Girls Cross Country
    Coach Sheri Dempsey--Record 6-1

  • NYSSWA Weekly Poll--#3, Class B
  • Did not have #1 runner, Megan Young (injury) at Manhattan Invitational

    11.) Suffern Boys Cross Country
    Coach Joe Biddy--Record 7-0

  • NYSSWA Weekly Poll--#21 in powerful Class AA
  • Solid race at Manhattan with 3rd place finish

    12.) Pearl River Boys Cross Country
    Coach Mike Kiernan--Record 7-2

  • NYSSWA Weekly Poll--#5, Class B
  • Moves back in the Dandy Dozen with the program's first win ever at Manhattan College Invitational HONORABLE MENTION: (All other teams ranked by the NYSSWA/NYSSCOGS:)

    We will attempt to rate the teams on the following:
    1. Weekly National Rankings by such services as ESPN Rise
    2. Rely heavily on the NYSSWA Weekly Polls
    3. Utilize the MSG Varsity rankings
    4. Use the Journal News rankings, standings and scores
    5. Use the Rockland Sports News summaries and scores
    6. We can only go on the info that coaches report to both the Journal News & Rockland Sports News!
