NYSSWA All-State plaques

John Moriello's NYSSWA blog
Monday, Jan. 17, 2011: Coleman's monster game lifts J-D to win in Mass.
Leading off today: It was a split decision this weekend for the top-ranked boys basketball teams in New York's largest classes.

Jamesville-DeWitt, the three-time defending New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class A champion, picked up an impressive win. Dajuan Coleman finished with 23 points, 20 rebounds and five assists in a 76-64 victory against Webster Groves, Mo., in the Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass.

In the decisive sequence, Coleman pulled down defensive rebounds and outletted to teammates for back-to-back layups. The 6-foot-10 junior then rebounded Webster Groves' next miss, dribbled downcourt and dished for the assist to finish breaking open what had been a 56-52 game.

Tyler Cavanaugh paced the Red Rams (9-0) with 26 points.

The Red Rams have a game coming up Friday vs. Decatur, Ga., Columbia (10-1) in the Primetime Shootout in Morgantown, W.Va.

On Saturday, Lincroft (N.J.) CBA rollwed past Class AA No. 1 Abraham Lincoln 63-45 at the Hoop Group Boardwalk Showcase at Monmouth University.

Eric Shaw scored 12 of his career-high 19 points in the first half for CBA. Shaquille Stokes scored 27 points in a losing effort for the Railsplitters (14-1).

Another day, another drama: The New York City scholastic sports scene quite often resembles a train wreck -- you don't want to look, but you can't help it.

There have been shootings outside gyms, coaches in shoving matches with parents, on-court fights that have emptied the bleachers, and spats between coaches. And that's been in just the last 10 days.

The latest intrigue having absolutely nothing to do with breaking presses or making free throws took place yesterday. The New York Post reported today that Nazareth girls coach Apache Paschall found himself in more controversy yesterday. According to the paper, the threat of CHSAA sanctions forced Paschall to move up the start of his team's game against Mary Louis Academy after the Nazareth MLK Showcase fell far behind schedule. It resulted in Bishop Loughlin and Mount Vernon having their game start five hours later than scheduled.

Here's what apparently happened: As St. Anthony’s took on Truman, Paschall was texted by Nazareth AD

Rochelle Murphy that she had spoken to Mary Louis counterpart Joe Lewinger and that their game had to start on time because it was a CHSAA league game.

Paschall said that he was told Nazareth could have to forfeit up to two league games and face a

postseason ban if he didn't comply. The schedule backup began when a referee for the first game was delayed by about an hour due to car trouble, Paschall told the paper.

"I said, 'I want that in writing before the game starts,’ because it’s always something,” Paschall told the paper. "If there were three overtime games or something like that like we’ve all seen a million times since we’ve been coaching basketball -– boys or girls -– and no one was complaining, the referees weren’t complaining, then what’s the problem?”

That seems to be a fair enough point. It begs the question of who contacted the league office to register a complaint yesterday about the delay; Lewinger denies he was the instigator, and Mary Louis coach Kevin White told the paper it was "a league issue."

As it turned out, Nazareth breezed to a 67-46 victory.
