NYSSWA All-State plaques

Friday, Jan. 14, 2010: Ishaq Williams picks Notre Dame
Leading off today: Ishaq is about to join the Irish.

Coveted Abraham Lincoln defensive end/tight end Ishaq Williams from Abraham Lincoln in the PSAL has committed to continue his football career at Notre Dame, the NYSSWA's Joe Glus confirmed Friday afternoon.

Citing sources familiar with the player's recruitment, Glus reported that Williams had canceled a scheduled recruiting visit to Penn State. Syracuse University was the other school in contention for Williams, a first-team all-state selection by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

The New York Post reported this morning the 6-foot-6, 220-pound standout is expected to arrive on campus in time to attend classes in South Bend, Ind., as a so-called "grayshirt." That would allow him to take part in spring practice.

More football: Earlier this week, Fort Hamilton receiver and defensive back Brandon Reddish committed to Syracuse. Reddish, another first-team all-state pick in Class AA, was The New York Post’s all-city player of the year.

The three-year starter scored 18 TDs and made seven interceptions as a senior.

Soccer tourney staying put: Middletown is likely to host the NYSPHSAA boys soccer tournament through 2014. The Times Herald-Record reported Middletown High was approved by the state soccer committee for a three-year extension beyond the two-year deal that began last fall.

"It's a done deal,'' Section 9 chairman Pete Ferguson told the paper. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association's executive committee must give

formal approval this month.

Middletown was recently awarded the boys' 2012 lacrosse state finals.

Scoring record: Harpursville senior Hannah Kimmel broke the Section 4 girls basketball record for career points Wednesday when she poured in 36 during a 67-45 victory over Unadilla Valley.

The performance gave his 2,217 points in a six-year career to move past Megan Shay of Candor (2,205 in 2005) and Stefanie Collins of Odessa-Montour (2,204 in 2001).

"I was hitting everything for some reason," Kimmel, who has committed to play at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn., told The Press & Sun-Bulletin "I didn't really have a game plan. I just kind of walked in, started hitting shots and I'm like, 'Alright, this is working.'
