NYSSWA All-State plaques

Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011: Upsets are the theme of the day in basketball
Leading off today: We get one or two nights a year like this on the basketball court, and the first Friday back after the holiday break is as good a time as any to get it out of the way.

Upsets, upsets and more upsets littered the hoops landscape last night, and Section 2 was ground zero.

LaSalle, which carried a 3-6 record into the game, scored the biggest upset of the Albany-area season

thus far with a 68-66 triumph over the Troy boys, who were ranked No. 11 in Class AA by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

Tyler Reed led the Cadets with 26 points, and LaSalle withstood the Flying Horses' 30-point fourth quarter. LaSalle led 48-36 after the third quarter and finished the night 15-for-18 on free throws.

Germantown, ranked third in Class D but playing without leading scorer and rebounder Mike Wyant, dropped a 72-64 decision to Loudonville Christian, which got monster efforts from T.J. Duguid (25 points, 10 rebounds) and Tom Fijal (24 points, 22 rebounds).

Watervliet, on the cusp of regaining its state ranking in Class B after upending Class A Lansingburgh, suffered a setback in the form of a 77-75 loss to Cohoes in double overtime. Tyler Skaaryp's three-pointer proved to be the winning basket, and Malcolm Shivers led the way with 26 points.

In the CHSAA, Bishop Loughlin (5-5) edged Class AA No. 14 Xaverian (6-2) 56-54 on the heels of its solid win over Philadelphia Dobbins Tech five days earlier.

“They showed me something today,” Loughlin coach Ed Gonzalez told The New York Post after Davonte Dunham led the way with 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists. “The kids showed a commitment to playing defense and rebounding. When we do that, we should be in most games.”

Loughlin went 10-for-24 on three-pointers and 16 of 18 at the free-throw line.

And in Section 5, Fairport (3-4) handed Irondequoit (7-1) its first loss 63-44. Irondequoit was coming off a mid-week upset of Class AA No. 9 Rush-Henrietta.

Girls upsets: Four-time defending Section 2 champion Watervliet was toppled by Cohoes 54-53.

Cohoes won its seventh straight game after getting off to an 0-2 start. Junior guard My’Asia Alston (30 points, six rebounds) and Bailei Tetrault (14) paced the Tigers, offsetting 26 points by Lashana Tolliver.

Watervliet was minus point guard Ailayia Demand, who was suspended by the school.

More girls games: No. 10 Shaker (8-1) blew past No. 20 Colonie (7-2) 61-37 in a battle of state-ranked Class AA teams. Madison Rowland scored 15 points in the first quarter en route to 23 for the game to go along with 14 rebounds.

More boys games: Jamesville-DeWitt rallied from a point down at the half and defeated Syracuse CBA 59-46. The Rams put together a 15-0 run bridging the second and third quarters in a sold-out J-D gym.

"The momentum just shifted. We started playing our game and we started pushing the tempo,” J-D's Pete Drescher said.

The Red Rams (6-0) are top-ranked in Class A; CBA (5-2) is ranked 20th in Class AA.

Drescher scored 15 points in the second half, including two three-point baskets and two three-point plays, to top J-D with 17 points. Junior Dajuan Coleman had 14 points and 14 rebounds.

No. 4 Saratoga 5-2. Joe Drabin scored a goal in each period for te Spartans, and Steve Castner and John Wise each added a goal and an assist.

   Gates Chili is 8-0-2.

Football developments: While a number of the nation's top prospects will declare their college choices today during and after the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, don't count on Ishaq Williams to declare just yet.

The Abraham Lincoln defensive end and tight end will delay his decision for at least a few days, Railsplitters coach Shawn O'Connor told The New York Daily News.

It's been widely reported that Williams had his choice down to Notre Dame, Penn State or Syracuse, but Miami (Fla.) is believed to entered the picture following the hiring of Al Golden. Having taken summer classes, Williams can graduate early and thus enroll in college this month as a grayshirt.

Meanwhile Jordan Canzeri's stock continues to grow, but the Troy running back has fallen victim for the moment to the coaching carousel.

Canzeri wasn't getting much notice from major-conference schools until a stellar performance in the NYSPHSAA Class AA final vs. Rush-Henrietta, but now Rutgers, Connecticut and Pittsburgh have been keeping in touch.

Connecticut is seemingly back to square one for now following the departure of Randy Edsall to coach at Maryland, but the incoming staff may cozy up to Canzeri in a bid to catch up to Big East rivals in filling out its class, Ditto for Pitt, which has fired two head coaches in a month and is in shambles in terms of respecting.

It was thought the Panthers might offer this week, but the school fired Mike Haywood after his New York's weekend arrest in South Bend, Ind.

PSAL reacts: The PSAL took action Friday, a day after an incident in which players from Thomas Jefferson and host South Shore exchanged blows and fans charged the court.

South Shore was booted from today's PSAL Mid-Winter Classic at St. Francis College against McKee/Staten Island Tech, The New York Daily News reported.

The league also left open the possibility of sanctions against both teams after South Shore's Wayne Martin allegedly struck Jefferson's Edson Avila in the head while officials were resolving a question an issue at the scorer's table.

"Both teams will be suspended, pending an investigation," Department of Education spokesperson Margie Feinberg told the paper.

Some fans ran onto the court after the third-quarter punch before coaches and school safety officers intervened. Avila and Martin were ejected and the game continued, with South Shore upsetting Jefferson, 69-64.

Extra points: Syracuse Henninger senior right-hander Bobby Moro rolled his fourth career perfect game Thursday during a 227-300-226--753 series vs. Baldwinsville. Moro, a four-year varsity bowler, carried a 215 average last season.
