Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010: PSAL reportedly moving forward with pitch counts
Leading off today: As had been speculated earlier this year, the PSAL will begin enforcing pitch counts next baseball season, The New York Daily News reported.

Coaches will be required to log the number of pitches thrown by their hurlers and report the data to the PSAL. One coach told the paper he expects pitchers to be limited to 105 pitches in a day; those throwing 25 or fewer pitches will be able to throw again the next day, with mandatory days of rest increasing based on the amount of work logged.

A formal announcement is expected Wednesday, the paper reported. City Councilmen Oliver Koppell and Lewis Fidler championed the campaign to limit wear and tear on pitchers' arms.

CHSAA baseball commissioner Wally Stampfel said there is no plan by that organization to follow the lead of the PSAL. "I don't want the league telling me how many pitches my kids can throw," said Stampfel, who coaches at Mt. St. Michael.

Niagara Falls makes decision: The Niagara Falls school board has named Salvatore Constantino as the new boys basketball coach, replacing Giulio Colangelo. Constantino was the girls coach last season.

Colangelo went 84-11 in four seasons and guided the Wolverines to NYSPHSAA Class AA finals in 2008 and 2009. He was not retained following last season's 15-5 mark.

Constantino was one of four candidates to interview, AD John Forcucci told The Buffalo News. Forcucci said Colangelo ran "a very strong program," but that Constantino "had a very good interview, and a good vision for the program and for the students."

Girls soccer: Yorktown scored a penalty-kicks win over Scarsdale, ranked 16th in Class AA by the NYSSWA, after the teams finished tied 2-2 in their Section 1 pre-quarterfinal yesterday. Yorktown coach Rich Armstrong moved midfielder Tori Patterson into goal after she shot and scored to start the shootout.

"I spoke to her about playing in goal if we got to penalty kicks," Armstrong told The Journal News. "She stepped off the field and looked at me to say she was ready. Some inkling inside of me said we have to put Tori in goal. She's a great athlete."

On Wednesday, Yorktown edged New Rochelle 2-1 in an outbracket game as Patterson tallied with 4:37 left in the second overtime.

of the season off a rebound with :50 seconds left in sudden death as Newfane upset Class B No. 18 Allegany-Limestone 4-3 in a Section 6 quarterfinal. A-L took a 2-0 lead before Newfane's Alexis Moreland scored her 30th goal of the season.

Boys soccer: Hartford has won played straight games in overtime following its Section 2 Class D quarterfinal victory over North Warren by a 2-1 score. Charles Cornell scored 21 seconds into the first overtime.

Tragedy in Kansas: Spring Hill (Kan.) defeated Osawatomie (Kan.) 99-72 in a wild football game Thursday overshadowed by the death of running back Nathan Stiles. The Spring Hill senior, who already had two touchdowns, was hit hard after intercepting a pass in the second quarter and left the game. Coach Anthony Orrick said Stiles complained of head pain

before he collapsed on the sideline.

He was taken to a Kansas City hospital, where he died early yesterday.

Stiles, crowned homecoming king earlier this month, had missed several games after suffering a concussion on Oct. 1. He had been cleared to play last week, the Olathe News reported.

Marathon in Texas: Two Texas football teams set a national record by playing 12 overtimes in a struggle that last 5½ hours. Jacksonville defeated Nacogdoches 84-81 in a game in which both were vying to advance to the playoffs.    Jacksonville only had to win to advance, but Nacogdoches needed to win by at least eight points to keep its hopes alive. Nacogdoches had several opportunities to win but instead intentionally threw the ball out the back of the end zone on two-point conversion attempts in order to force another overtime and try to win by eight.

The game was tied at 28 at the end of regulation.

Extra points: Cornwall senior Aisling Cuffe broke Aislinn Ryan's 2004 course record by almost eight seconds during the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association cross country championships at Bear Mountain. Cuffe finished in 16:27.56 to become the OCIAA's third three-time girls champ.
