Kicking off: No. 11 Syracuse CBA changed the complexion of the Section 3 Class AA race last night with a 14-10 road victory over No. 3 Baldwinsville.
Cold, wet weather affected both offenses and limited the teams to a combined eight first downs, including just one for the winners after halftime. The Brothers held Baldwinsville sophomore Tyler Rouse to 82 yards on 30 carries after he had rolled up 1,347 yards in his first six games.
“It’s a shame we had this kind of a situation, but adapt and overcome,” CBA coach Joe Casamento told The Post-Standard. “That’s what we told the kids. We couldn’t throw in it. We couldn’t run the option. But you find a way. I’m so very proud of these kids.”
CBA drove 51 yards on 10 plays on its first possession and scored on Tyler Hamblin’s wind-aided, fourth down-and-11 throw to Jack Pfohl covering 27 yards. A fumble recovery at the B'ville 27 by Mike Magnarelli set up a 10-yard TD carry by Hamblin near the end of the second quarter to make the score 14-0.
First down: Watertown senior running back Tevion Cappe ran for a school-record 391 yards on 30 carries and scored five touchdowns as the Cyclones beat Camden 44-7. Cappe's fifth TD came on a 90-yard carry in the third quarter and boosted his total to 25 TDs for the season.
In another heavy-duty performance, QB Dakota Peel rushed for 303 yards and four first-half TDs as Class B No. 3 Alden beat Maryvale 49-21.
The night's top ariel effort came from Niskayuna's Kyle Bayly, who passed for 426 yards and four TDs on 21-for-37 accuracy. The Silver Warriors earned a 42-17 Class A win at Ballston Spa as Nick Schuler counted three TDs among his eight receptions for 256 yards.
Second down: Running back Joe Miller caught a 46-yard pass from Aaron Ertel with 1:36 left as Class B No. 2 Depew rallied for a 19-16 victory over host Lancaster before an estimated 6,000 fans at Lancaster's Foyle-Kling Field.
Ertel was 3-for-3 passing on the winning drive after Lancaster turned the ball over on downs in the 83rd meeting between the schools.
Anthony Emmanuele rushed for two TDs for the Wildcats. Lancaster's 16-point second quarter was highlighted by Geoff Franger's 89-yard interception with 12 seconds left in the half.
The Redskins have a 47-30-6 lead in the series that began in 1919.
Also in Section 6, No. 10 Lackawanna wasn't so fortunate in avoiding the upset bug. Eden defensive back Evan Zittel made an interception at his own 8-yard line to wrap up a victory in Class B as well as a berth in sectionals.
Eden's only pass attempt of the night was a 29-yard scoring play from Kyle Zittel to Derek Wilder with :31 left in the third quarter to close out the scoring.
"We came here and we did what we needed to do," said Evan Zittel. "This was a playoffs or no playoffs situation. We just did what we needed to do."
Halftime: No. 6 General Brown broke away from a 6-6 halftime tie to beat No. 15 Watertown Immaculate HEart Central 22-12 to secure its second straight perfect regular season. Senior Nick Klusacek scored on two short runs for the Lions, and Mark Allen ran for 80 yards on 12 carries and tacked on a 1-yard TD run.
"We wanted a battle,'' first-year coach Tom Frears said. "I just thought we showed our character and determination the second half by doing what we do best.''
IHC was limited to 51 yards rushing on 21 attempts.
Third down: No. 4 Sachem North broke to a 20-6 lead in the first five minutes and pounded WIlliam Floyd 40-6 in a Suffolk County Class AA clash.

Floyd's A.J. Otranto answered with a 61-yard TD pass to Kenny Grimm, but Crossan motored 85 yards with the ensuing kickoff. The Flaming Arrows would later make it 26-6 on their only throw of the game, Angelo Armine's 30-yard toss to Scanna that made it 26-6 at the half.
