Friday, Oct. 1, 2010: Bellport lineman Sloan picks Syracuse
Leading off today: Syracuse University has lined up its fifth football recruit from New York State's senior class, landing a verbal commitment from Bellport two-way lineman Ryan Sloan, The Post-Standard reported today.

The 6-foot-4, 310-pound player was a first-team New York State Sportswriters Association all-state selection in Class A last fall.

He's Syracuse's 16th recruit overall in the incoming class and Sloan is the 16th New York senior to commit to a BCS program thus far. For the full list, visit RoadToSyracuse.com.

Punishment: The PSAL is suspending two Boys & Girls football coaches for their actions at the end of last weekend's loss against Campus Magnet. Head coach Barry O'Connor and assistant Clive Harding received one-game suspensions that will not have to be served for the same game, thus minimizing disruptions to the Kangaroos program.

"The head coach as well as the assistant coach are suspended one game each," Margie Feinberg, a Department of Education spokeswoman, announced the decision. O'Connor told The Daily Newsthat he and Harding had yet to decide which games they would miss. Boys & Girls hosts Class AA No. 17 Lincoln tomorrow.

As Marc Raimondi of The New York Post noted, the PSAL showed some unexpected wisdom in splitting up the suspensions. By all accounts, the 'Roos players behaved just fine while several of their coaches were losing their cool -- a volunteer assistant was fired this week after reports that he mooned Campus Magnet fans -- at the end of last weekend's loss. Losing two experience coaches at once would have burdened them unnecessarily.

"For an incident where the only combat was of the verbal variety, that seems pretty fair to me," he wrote.

Another incident: Having cleaned up the football mess, the PSAL now has a soccer situation to address. The FDR and Madison boys teams, both 5-1 in the Brooklyn 'A' League, have each been suspended for at least one match following their brawl in Brooklyn on Wednesday, The Daily News reported.

Madison was to play host to Sheepshead Bay, and FDR was to face Lincoln today. Those games have been postponed pending a PSAL investigation.

The fight erupted in the handshake line after FDR’s 3-2 victory over Madison. The paper reported that players from both teams threw punches and spectators rushed the field to join the melee. Several players filed complaints with the police.

The paper reported that the game at the Parade Grounds, a public park, lacked the staff and security typically in place for games on school campuses.

Just a thought: At some point, the PSAL is going to need to overhaul its policies (and public image) in a major way. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that the organization has more serious incidents per year that all of the rest of the state's organizations combined. Do we have to get a couple of people killed in order for someone to start making sure that basic security measures are being taken?

Up for a challenge: Pete Tobey at The Post-Star notes that Schuylerville, Greenwich and Lake George are a combined 10-2 so far after making classification jumps this fall. The Black Horses, who moved from Class C to B, are 4-0. The Witches and Warriors, meanwhile, are both 3-1 in Class C.

Schuylerville went 3-6 last season with a young squad but is now outscoring opponents by an average of 42-8.

Lake George is getting the job done with a roster of just 21 players. "It would be a whole lot easier as a 'D,'" coach Jeff Bennett joked.
