Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010: Status of Monroe-Woodbury QB uncertain
Leading off today: Monroe-Woodbury, ranked No. 1 in Class AA, could be without junior quarterback Ryan Spelman on Friday against Kingston because of an ankle injury.

Citing a team source, The Times Herald-Record reported Spelman sustained a high ankle sprain during a 33-7 victory over Binghamton on Thursday and will sit out against Kingston.

Crusaders coach Pat D'Aliso said the QB was injured on the second series but would not comment specifically yesterday on Spelman's condition.

Sophomore Justin Kaffenberger entered took over vs. Binghamton with the game scoreless. He rushed for 84 yards and threw a touchdown pass.

F-M closer to upgrade: The Fayetteville-Manlius school board voted to accept a proposal for a boosters-funded turf field at the high school.

The move paves the way for the district to accept the gift down the road; The Fayetteville Manlius Community Sports Facility Association has already raised half the $1.8 million needed, The Post-Standard reported.

One speaker at the meeting questioned why the board is approving something the residents overwhelming rejected in two referendums, but this is a virtually no-strings-attached gift that does not impose new taxes.

Boosters said they intend to set up a turf maintenance fund of about $100,000 at the launch with additional annual donations expected. Part of the maintenance cost will be

defrayed by savings of about $17,000 a year in grass maintenance costs.

with a teenage girl, pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors in court Monday, The Buffalo News reported.

Hasan pleaded guilty to aggravated harassment and endangering the welfare of a child before Amherst Town Justice Geoffrey K. Klein, the paper reported. He had also been charged with two misdemeanor counts of forcible touching.

"We thought that this would be the best choice, not putting my daughter through a trial,” the mother of the girl, now an 18-year-old college student, told the paper. "Even though it’s with her every day, we didn’t want to rehash it and give him the pleasure of seeing her in court."

Sentencing has been set for Dec. 16. Each count of a Class A misdemeanor can lead to a sentence ranging from no jail time to a one-year sentence. Hasan was fired from his coaching job after his arrest.

"He was a great coach," the mother said. "I can’t take that away from him, but he had a dark side. He had some serious issues."
