Football two-minute read: Games of Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010
Kicking off: Clarkstown North held tough down the stretch to earn a 14-6 football victory yesterday against North Rockland, beating the Red Raiders for the first tim since 1979.

"It's history now," Rams senior Christian Bouquet told The Journal News after his 25-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter stood up. "I can always say I beat North Rockland my senior year."

A bad snap on a Rams punt attempt gave North Rockland a final opportunity, and the Red Raiders converted two third downs before Tareek Turner and Mike Paolino successfully defended passes to shut down the threat.

First down: Weather got the best of Long Island, where more than 50 games were scheduled ahead of the Yom Kippur observance and many ended up being suspended or not played at all according to Newsday.

Only 15 of 27 Section 11 and seven of 27 in Section 8 games made it to the final horn. The rest will be continued or played today through Monday. The highly anticipated Lindenhurst at Sachem North game was moved to today at 2 p.m.

North Babylon, ranked No. 9 in Class AA by the New York State Sportswriters Association, held a 35-21 lead vs. Half Hollow Hills West with 4:50 to go when lightning forced the contest to be suspended until today. North Babylon halfback Preshod McCoy scored three TDs in the contest between 2009 Suffolk County divisional champions.

Meanwhile, Class B No. 14 Bayport-Blue Point and Mount Sinai were scoreless when they were stopped with 9:03 to go in the first half. They'll resume today at 2:30 p.m.

Second down: Shenendehowa, ranked 12th in Class AA, squeezed past Ballston Spa 7-0 as Tony Fusco's gallop to the end zone in the first quarter held up.

The teams combined for 146 points en route to 2-0 starts to the new season. Shen held the Scotties to 139 yards of total offense, and Ballston Spa's best opportunity came on a 13-play drive that stalled at the Plainsmen's 19 midway through the fourth quarter.

"It isn't what you score, it's what they score," Shen coach Brent Steuerwald told The Times Union.

Third down: Williamsville South, ranked ninth in Class A, cruised past No. 13 Amherst 45-8. Buddy Ammerman scored three touchdowns and Joe Licata (20-for-27, 272 yards) threw for three for the Billies.

"I thought it was the best we played on both sides of the ball since I've been at South," third-year coach Kraig

Kurzanski told The Buffalo News. "Our defense was terrific for us tonight. They gave us opportunities, they changed the field a few times for us, and the offense was able to move the ball."

Ammerman caught one TD pass and ran for two scores en route to 119 yards spread across 20 carries. He had two catches for 65 yards.

Fourth down: Some downstate clashes went right down to the wire.

Brandon Diorio's 20-yard field goal with :06 to play carried Union-Endicott past host Newburgh Free Academy 24-21. Newburgh had rallied from a 21-7 deficit in the fourth quarter.

Rondout Valley edged Pine Plains 18-12 as John Seils scored on a 5-yard-run in the fourth overtime of the non-leaguer. Seils had a 23-yard scoring run in the second OT for Rondout Valley, which lacked enough players to field a varsity team last fall.

"This is huge," coach George Iacobaccio told The Times Herald-Record. "This is basically a new team. The kids never gave up. They played with a lot of heart and intensity."

Meanwhile, Ellenville topped Spackenkill 18-13 when Robert Borriello threw a 16-yard TD pass to Jose Aldarondo as time expired in Poughkeepsie. Spackenkill had rallied from a 12-0 halftime deficit to lead with 1:15 left.

Quick kicks: Senior Javonte' Mack returned a first-quarter kickoff 85 yards for one TD and rushed for four more as Irondequoit surprised Class AA No. 19 Gates Chili 46-28. He finished with 88 yards on the ground on 20 carries, and junior QB Briele Caples added 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

The stat sheet: James DeCicco went 10-for-16 for 195 yards and a four touchdowns to lift Kingston over Pine Bush 49-0. He also rushed nine times for 78 yards and a TD.
