Tuesday, June 15, 2010: Two more New York girls make national hoops team
Leading off today: Add two more New Yorkers to Team USA in women's basketball.

I noted over the weekend that junior Bria Smith (Christ The King) and sophomore Breanna Stewart (Cicero-North Syracuse) had been selected to the Under-17 team. Now, Stefanie Dolson (Minisink Valley) and Bria Hartley (North Babylon) have been named to the Under-18 squad after six days of tryouts.

"I never thought I'd be in this position," Dolson, a 6-foot-5 center, told The Times Herald-Record. Coming into it, I was like 'I'm going to play the way I play and I'm going to play as hard as I can. And if they don't want me, then that's what they want.'"

There were 26 invitees at the camp, with the first cut getting the list to 16 before the final 12 were named Sunday. The schedule included morning skills workouts and afternoon scrimmages with the U-17 candidates.

Dolson averaged 22.8 points, 17.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 5.2 blocks as a senior.

Dolson, Hartley and the others will play in the FIBA Americas U18 Championship from June 23-27 in Colorado against a field of seven other nations.

Dolson and Hartley will be teammates again in the fall as freshmen at the University of Connecticut.

Postseason recognition: Somers shortstop Tammy Wray has been selected Gatorade's New York player of the year in softball.

The LSU recruit hit .623, hit 10 home runs and drove in 34 runs as a senior. She also drew 29 walks, driving up her on-base percentage to .744.

"She had an outstanding senior year," Somers coach Bob Antonucci told The Journal News. "She now holds every major hitting record for Somers softball, and her defensive skills are second to none. She can do it all in the field."

  •    St. Ray's coach calls it a day: Ron Patnosh has retired after 45 seasons and 1,080 victories as the only varsity baseball coach St. Raymond's has ever had, but he won't be leaving the scene altogether.

Patnosh, 71, made the announcement last Tuesday following a 2-0 loss to Xavier in the CHSAA 'A' Intersectional semifinals. Patnosh founded the program in 1966 and is second to Archbishop Molloy's Jack Curran in CHSAA victories.

"I'm staying as St. Ray's athletic director, and I'm gonna be on the field with the boys," he told The Daily News. "At our field now, the boys have to get it ready to play before we play. I'm gonna cut the grass and take care of that maintenance. And I'll sit in right field and watch the games. I have to. My juniors have already demanded it."

Seven-on-seven: The official start of summer is six days away, which can only mean one thing: Football 7-on-7 passing tournaments will be popping up everywhere quite soon.

There'll be a pretty good one Saturday at Elmira Free Academy, with at least 16 schools signed up to participate in the United States Marines High School 7 vs. 7 Passing Tournament, part of a four-city touring event in the Northeast.

Action begins at 10 a.m. with teams guaranteed three games and division winners advancing to the semifinals. New York teams that have signed up include: Bath, Binghamton, Cortland, Dryden, Elmira Free, Elmira Southside, Hornell, Horseheads, Oneonta, Sidney, Rochester Marshall, Rochester East, Unatego and Waverly.
