Monday, May 10, 2010: Bethlehem captures Morabito softball championship
Leading off today: Winning certainly has a way of curing what ails you.

Reeling a bit from consecutive losses to Columbia, Shenendehowa and Ballston Spa last week, the Bethlehem softball team entered the weekend as a bit of a riddle. Were the Eagles as good as they looked during an 8-0 start, or were the recent games against a higher level of competition the truer indication of their ability?

Well, we think we have the answer. After tuning up with a 7-0 win vs. Averill Park on Friday on the strength of two Mary Beth Dombrowski home runs, Bethlehem, ranked 18th in the state in Class AA, swept its way to four more weekend victories in Binghamton to win the 16-team James "Ace" Morabito Memorial Invitational. The Eagles won the title yesterday with a 10-0 triumph vs. No. 19 Horseheads.

Bethlehem (13-3) beat No. 7 Cicero-North Syracuse 2-1 and John Jay 7-0 on Saturday. With her team donning pink uniforms presented by coach Karen Gentile yesterday at breakfast, junior Toni Edwards threw two shutouts on the final day of the tournament, beating upstart Baldwinsville 5-0 and then holding Horseheads to two hits.

Dombrowski, a shortstop, was selected the tournament MVP.

Baldwinsville topped Mechanicville 3-0 in the third-place game, and Valley Central's Jane Pinckney threw a perfect game to beat Vestal 7-0 for fifth place.

Rowing results: Saratoga Rowing Association girls won finals in the girls junior 8, girls second 8 and girls senior quad yesterday at the New York State Scholastic Rowing Association championships in Saratoga Springs, but their nine-year reign in the senior 8 ended at the hand of the Albany Rowing Club.

Avenging a loss last weekend in the Section 2 championships, Albany (comprised largely of competitors from Bethlehem High) navigated the Fish Creek course in 5:35.90 to 'Toga's 5:41.29. Saratoga's future looks bright, however, as its junior 8 squad -- made up entirely of freshmen -- won in 5:38.90.

Top finishers will return for the Scholastic Rowing Association of America national regatta May 28-29.

Buffalo clubs won three straight lightweight races midway through the day. Canisius won the boys lightweight eight, the West Side Rowing Club took the girls lightweight eight, and St. Joe's earned the boys

Singles and doubles sculls were canceled because of the gusty winds.

Manhasset rolling: No. 1 Manhasset downed No. 2 Cold Spring Harbor 7-2 on Saturday as the state's top two Class C boys lacrosse squads clashed during the Day of Champions at Manhasset.

Midfielder Pat Moroney and attackman Matt Tompkins scored twice apiece in the first half. Junior goaltender Frank Morelli made 14 saves in the game, including nine in the first half, and Ricky Buhr won 10 of 13 faceoffs.

A rematch may very well be in the cards. They've met in six straight Section 8 Class C finals.

'Kurz' crushes record: Lancaster's Melissa Kurzdorfer broke the state girls shot put record with a throw of 49-9.50 at the Hartford Invitational on Saturday in New Britain, Conn. The throw was an inch better than the 1984 mark by Bellport's Cheryl Klein. Stacey Schroeder of Grand Island has set the Section 6 mark of 49-5 in 1992).

Kurzdorfer, a senior, also broke meet records in the discus (159-8) and hammer (192-8).

Loucks Games: Jordan Yamoah cleared 15-11.75 to set meet and Dutchess County records in the pole vault and help Arlington to a share of the boys team crown with St. Anthony's on Saturday in the Loucks Games at White Plains.

Peekskill senior Daquan Brickhouse, a first-team all-state basketball player in Class A, won the high jump with an effort of 6-8.

North Babylon senior Vanessa Stewart threw the discus 143-7 to set the meet record for girls.
