Friday, May 7, 2010: Canandaigua's 30-game lacrosse streak halted by Thomas
Leading off today: Midfielder J.T. Hauck scored with 24 seconds left as host Webster Thomas edged Class B No. 1 Canandaigua 11-10 yesterday in boys lacrosse, ending the Braves' 30-game winning streak.

Hauck, a senior, finished with two goals and two assists and scored the tying goal at 4:39 of the fourth quarter. Senior attackman Jack Hinderland added four goals, and Zach Crawford scored three.

Brandon Thomson and Tom LaCrosse scored hat tricks for Canandaigua, the defending NYSPHSAA Class B champion.

Albany hiring is official: Jon McClement was approved as Albany High's fourth football coach in four years last night at the Albany school board's meeting. Robbin Williams was picked to become coach last month but withdrew from consideration amidst questions about the accuracy of his resume.

"Kids were coming to me every day and asking me, 'Will you do it?' I had planned to only deal with basketball," McClement told The Times Union.

McClement has coached varsity basketball for three seasons but has 19 years of experience as a football assistant.

He's no one-hit wonder: It's the leadoff hitter's responsibility to reach base, and Aaron Freida takes that role seriously. Pittsford Sutherland's senior center fielder has been hit by a pitch in each of the Knights' 14 games so far this season.

"Every single one has been right at me," Freida told the Democrat and Chronicle. "I don't have a 14-game hitting streak, but I've been on base every game."

No-hitter, maybe: Here's why I spend about as much time writing about no-hitters in baseball and softball as the Nobel Prize selection committee spends trying to find appropriate ways to honor Paris Hilton.

Depending upon which bench you viewed the game from yesterday, Kings Park lefty Brandon Haney threw either a no-hitter or a one-hitter in a 1-0 victory over Class A No. 2 Islip. The Kings Park scorebook said "error" and the Islip book showed "single" regarding Stephen Provenzano's single-inning pop-up to the right side of the infield.

According to Newsday's account, the wind blew the ball just beyond the reach of second baseman Shane O'Leary, who couldn't get a glove on it.

"We marked it as an error at the time,'' Kings Park coach Mike Prisco told the paper. "He ran past it and I don't think he touched it. He misjudged it. He should have caught it."

Either way, Haney walked two and fanned four. "I didn't even know it was a no-hitter until my coach told me,'' he said.

Hey, kid, apparently you weren't alone in that respect.
