Tuesday, March 23, 2010: West Islip mourns death of soccer standout
Leading off today: Family and friends are mourning the death of West Islip soccer standout Alexis "Lexi" Pilkington, who took her own life this weekend according to her father.

Pilkington scored nine goals with five assists from midfield last fall as West Islip reached the NYSPHSAA Class AA semifinals before bowing out to eventual champion John Jay-East Fishkill.

Pilkington, 17, who had graduated early and was preparing to start school at Dowling College this fall, was undergoing counseling for an unspecified issue, her father told Newsday.

"I'm not hiding what happened in hopes it saves another kid," Thomas Pilkington told the newspaper. "They don't understand how much suffering and pain this does to those that are left. Remember her for all the positive things. She was always upbeat, always the competitor, always sticking up for her friends."

Pilkington also played lacrosse and was involved in several other activities. She was also a member of the school's Century Club for students who doing 100 hours of community service, a school counselor told the paper.

A memorial service will be held Thursday afternoon.

Pilkington assisted on Codi-Lynn Johnson's winning goal when West Islip rallied from two goals down in the final nine minutes against Sachem East in the Section 11 Class AA soccer final last fall.

Upon further review: Hard as it may be to imagine, Chris Secky was even better than we thought.

Upon further review, Maple Grove found that Secky scored 25 points (and not 23) in the NYSPHSAA boys basketball final on Saturday. The Maple Grove book had 25 all along but the official box appears to have credited one of his buckets to a teammate.

In the grand scheme of things, such a change would scarcely matter, However, the change pushes the two-time NYSSWA player of the year to 2,067 career points, moving him one point ahead of former Buffalo Nichols star Christian Laettner for ninth place on the Western New York list.

Department of bad timing: There's no disputing from this observer that he deserved the award, but Gatorade officials are probably a little chagrined with the timing of their New York Player of the Year award announcement.

Tobias Harris of Half Hollow Hills West has named the New York selection on Friday and proceeded to lay in the winning bucket against Rochester East the following day. While that was well and good, the Tennessee recruit's meltdowns in the third quarter of the Sunday final as well as in the awards ceremony that followed the loss to

Speaking of awards: I lost some of my notes from over the weekend, but I believe it was The Post-Star's Greg McManus who pointed out that Glens Falls has become a bit of a graveyard of Mr. Basketball Award winners.

Harris' HHH West team lost the NYSPHSAA final on Sunday, and 2009 co-recipients Brandon Triche (Jamesville-DeWitt) and Lance Stephenson (Abraham Lincoln) ended their careers with losses at the Federation tournament last March.

In 2008, Sylven Landesberg (Holy Cross) lost the Federation Class AA final to Stevenson's Abraham Lincoln squad. In 2007, Jonny Flynn of Niagara Falls never even made it to Glens Falls.

In 2006, however, Jonathan Mitchell and Mount Vernon successfully went the distance.

More on the Oliva situation: The New York Daily News reported over the weekend that its sources say Bob Oliva could be indicted in Massachusets by the end of the month.

A grand jury has been examining allegations that Oliva, who would go on to a stellar coaching career with the Christ the King boys basketball program, molested a teen family friend during a 1976 trip to Boston.

Former Oliva friend Sam Albano told the newspaper over the weekend that Oliva asked him to lie on his behalf in July 2008 once the alleged victim hired Boston lawyer Mitchell Garabedian, who has represented many victims of sexual abuse.

"He says, 'Will you say that you were in the hotel with us?' I said, 'You gotta be (expletive) kidding me," Albano told the paper. "You say you are innocent and now you want me to lie for you?' That's when it was all over between us."

Albano said he recounted the conversation to the grand jury last month and that he stayed at a different hotel during that 1976 trip and chance meeting in Boston.

Oliva has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
