Leading off today: Family and friends are mourning the death of West Islip soccer standout Alexis "Lexi" Pilkington, who took her own life this weekend according to her father.
Pilkington scored nine goals with five assists from midfield last fall as West Islip reached the NYSPHSAA Class AA semifinals before bowing out to eventual champion John Jay-East Fishkill.
Pilkington, 17, who had graduated early and was preparing to start school at Dowling College this fall, was undergoing counseling for an unspecified issue, her father told Newsday.
"I'm not hiding what happened in hopes it saves another kid," Thomas Pilkington told the newspaper. "They don't understand how much suffering and pain this does to those that are left. Remember her for all the positive things. She was always upbeat, always the competitor, always sticking up for her friends."
Pilkington also played lacrosse and was involved in several other activities. She was also a member of the school's Century Club for students who doing 100 hours of community service, a school counselor told the paper.
A memorial service will be held Thursday afternoon.
Pilkington assisted on Codi-Lynn Johnson's winning goal when West Islip rallied from two goals down in the final nine minutes against Sachem East in the Section 11 Class AA soccer final last fall.

In the grand scheme of things, such a change would scarcely matter, However, the change pushes the two-time NYSSWA player of the year to 2,067 career points, moving him one point ahead of former Buffalo Nichols star Christian Laettner for ninth place on the Western New York list.
Department of bad timing: There's no disputing from this observer that he deserved the award, but Gatorade officials are probably a little chagrined with the timing of their New York Player of the Year award announcement.
Tobias Harris of Half Hollow Hills West has named the New York selection on Friday and proceeded to lay in the winning bucket against Rochester East the following day. While that was well and good, the Tennessee recruit's meltdowns in the third quarter of the Sunday final as well as in the awards ceremony that followed the loss to
