Monday, Feb. 8, 2010: Rensselaer two-sport star facing rape charge
Leading off today: Rensselaer football and basketball senior standout Mico De Los Santos is facing multiple charges related to an alleged sexual encounter with a 13-year-old girl, The Times Union reported.

De Los Santos, 18 was remanded to the Rensselaer County Jail on $25,000 bail Saturday after being arraigned on charges of second-degree rape and second-degree criminal sex act, both felonies; and second-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child, both misdemeanors, the paper reported.

De Los Santos was selected a first-team defensive back in Class D by the New York State Sportswriters Association for his senior season last fall. Rensselaer's second-leading scorer was not with the team Saturday during a 55-47 boys basketball victory over Catskill. The Rams are 14-2 and ranked 14th in Class C.

Police said De Los Santo had sex with the girl in the early morning of Jan. 24 at his grandparents' home.

Sources told WTEN-TV that the sexual contact may not have been forced; under New York law a 13-year-old is not capable of giving consent.

Schenectady shakeup: The top three scorers on the Schenectady boys basketball team are gone in the aftermath of Friday's 70-44 loss to Albany CBA, The Times Union reported.

Schenectady coach Mark Sausville dismissed leading scorer Derrick Millinghaus following a locker-room argument, and younger brother Shadell Millinghaus was also removed from the team. Their brother, Devonte Millinghaus, decided to quit Sunday and did not attend practice.

The trio has accounted for about two-thirds of Schenectady's scoring output during an 8-5 start. Derrick Millinghaus was averaging 20.5 points a game.

Ann Millinghaus, the players' mother, said Derrick had an argument with Sausville and that her son did not put his hand into a team huddle in the locker room after the game.

She said she received a voice message from assistant AD Steve Boynton stating Derrick and Shadell had been dismissed.

"This doesn't seem like normal procedure to me," she said. "I talked to my sons and it is disrespectful on their part to talk back to an adult. I don't approve of that, but it also isn't the entire story."

Memorable action in NYC: The stars were out in Queens on Sunday as No. 8 Christ The King beat No. 7 Rice 60-52 with Louisville coach Rick Pitino and Florida’s Billy Donovan in attendance.

For good measure, the Knicks City Dancers performed, Walt "Clyde" Frazier offered some of his colorful

commentary alongside Madison Square Garden announcer Mike "Wally" Walczewski over the PA, and Funkmaster Flex and rapper Fabolous supplied halftime entertainment before 1,800 in attendance at CTK.

Dime Magazine's reporter went so far as to speculate it "could have been the greatest high school basketball spectacle ever." Here's pat of the reason why:

"Fans from both sides were decked out in rivalry t-shirts in their school’s colors, with matching foam fingers on either hand. The crowd erupted for the empire-tested battle when none other than Puppet LeBron and Puppet Kobe appeared on the JumboTron rocking Christ the King and Rice tees, giving a pre-game message to each squad. And in case you didn’t know, as CTK is a LeBron school and Rice is a Kobe school, both teams also had on the freshest of kicks with SMU Nike Air Max LeBron VIIs and Nike Zoom Kobe Vs."

Oh, and in Sunday's other sports action I believe there was some sort of pro football game in Miami.

Girls hockey: The semifinals pairings are set for the unofficial girls state hockey championship at the Skaneateles Community Center next weekend.

Skaneateles traveled to Potsdam on Saturday to earn a 2-1 victory and a spot in the Frozen Four vs. Oswego at 5 p.m. on Friday. That game will be followed by Chazy vs. Alexandria Bay, and the consolation and final begin the following day at noon.

Alexandria Bay needed two overtimes to eliminate Canton 3-2.

Extra points: Long-time Long Island football power St. Anthony's is looking for help filling out its schedule next fall. Friars AD Don Buckley is seeking an opponent for the weekend of Sept. 11. Anyone with an open slot on the schedule and an interest in playing can call Buckley at 631-271-2020, extension 229.
