Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010: Short-handed Jamestown suffers first loss
Leading off today: Playing short-handed has caught up to the Jamestown boys basketball team, ranked 11th in Class AA by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

The Red Raiders were without their top four scorers, suspended for a violation of the school's code of conduct policy, and lost last night to Frontier 64-57. Darius Edwards scored 25 points to lead Frontier, which overcame a 51-46 deficit through three quarters to hand Jamestown its first loss.

Jamestown played without Carlos Rivera, Darin Butts, Fletcher Larson and Jaysean Paige. Multiple boys and girls players were disciplined last weed for the rules infraction.

"They are good kids, and they made a bad choice," Jamestown coach and AD Ben Drake told The Buffalo News. "Unfortunately the team is suffering because of it."

Rivera and Paige will also sit out Tuesday's game against one-beaten Orchard Park, which got 29 points from Troy Nowak in a 62-49 victory over Williamsville North.

SNY Invitational: Senior forward Kadeem Jack, back on the ground for just three hours after a recruiting visit to Arizona, supplied 12 points and 12 rebounds as No. 1 Rice topped No. 12 Boys & Girls in the semifinals of the SNY Invitational.

"I am pretty tired," Jack told The Daily News. "I didn't have a good seat on the plane, so my knees were kind of stuffed up."

In the other semifinal, Cardozo ripped Class A No. 6 Long Island Lutheran 74-32. Dwayne Brunson led Cardozo with 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Reynaldo Walters added 16 points.

More from NYC: No. 13 Bishop Loughlin roared to a 17-point lead in the first quarter and defeated Christ The KIng 65-62 to break a four-game losing streak, including a matchup last week, to the No. 5 Royals. Villanova-bound forward Jayvaughn Pinkston scored 14 of his 29 points in the first quarter.

"I put my team on my back," Pinkston told The New York Post. "I couldn't lose to them twice in a row."

J-D still unbeaten: Jamesville-DeWitt, ranked No. 1 in Class A, overcame 25 points and 19 rebounds by Virginia recruit Will Regan to edge visiting No. 12 Buffalo Nichols 71-66. Jamesville-DeWitt sophomore center Dajuan Coleman produced 17 points, nine rebounds and two blocks for the Red Rams.

Nichols, which lost senior guard Ron Canestro to a broken finger this month, fought back from 15-point deficits in the second and fourth quarters, pulling to within 69-66 with 18 seconds to play.

"That’s what you would expect from a team that’s state ranked,” J-D coach Bob McKenney said. "That’s a great team. There’s a very good chance we could see them again (in the Federation tournament), especially if they get their starter back."

Double down: Hoosick Falls, ranked 10th in Class C,

edged Schuylerville 61-57 in double overtime. It was the Panthers' second OT win this season vs. Schuylerville, No. 16 in Class B. Hoosick Falls won 59-52 on Dec. 18.

Kevin McMahon scored 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, and sophomores Alex Lilac (15 points) and Tanner Williams (13) added another 28.

Big numbers: Senior Andrew Falvey of Cicero-North Syracuse netted 25 points and set a school mark with 23 rebounds as the Northstars beat Baldwinsville 70-56. C-NS is ranked 24th in Class AA.

In girls basketball, Bishop Grimes scored a 51-36 win vs. Weedsport behind Amanday Marceley's 13 points and 12 rebounds. The Cobras have already set a school record for victories in a season, and the win was No. 184 for coach John Cifonelli to eclipse the previous school mark by Barb Pfefferle from 1969-1983.

Millrose Games: Pat Schellberg of Delbarton High in Morristown, N.J., and Cory McGee of Pass Christian in Mississippi scored victories in the Millrose Games high school miles.

Schellberg hit the tape in 4:14.84.

McGee, who had been the runner-up in the girls race the past three years, finished in 4:52.77, the nation's top time this winter and the No. 9 mark in meet history.

"I have waited so long and worked so hard for this moment,” said McGee, a two-time National Scholastic indoor mile champ. "Being second three times has made this one of the biggest goals. To finally do this is one of the best feelings I’ve ever had."

Aisling Cuffe of Cornwall (4:55.56) outdueled Shenendehowa soph Lizzie Predemore (4:56.07) to claim second. Emily Lipari of Roslyn was fifth in 4:58.14.

Get there early: There's an excellent boys basketball tripleheader today at New Rochelle High, and it should draw quite a crowd.

At noon, rivals Rye and Harrison meet. Then it's Peekskill (Class A No. 13) vs. Poughkeepsie (Class AA No. 9) at 2:15, followed by New Rochelle vs. Mount Vernon, ranked fourth and 10th respectively among large schools, at 4:30.
