NYSSWA All-State plaques

Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010: Top-ranked Marion loses in overtime
Leading off today: The clock has run out on a No. 1 team that was living on borrowed time.

Taylor Isselhard (14 points) knocked down a 3-pointer with 25 seconds left in overtime to give Gananda a three-point lead en route to a 63-61 victory last night over Marion, top-ranked in Class C by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

Six days earlier, the Black Knights (10-1) had to fight off Lyons 54-45 in another overtime contest.

Billy Heumann scored a career-high 18 points for the Blue Panthers (8-5), who recoreded 20 assists on just 22 field goals.

Taking control: Canisius College recruit Jen Morabito scored her team's final 15 points as No. 16 Binghamton remained unbeaten in Class AA girls basketball with a 69-66 triumph over Horseheads.

Morabito opened the fourth quarter by setting up Madison Ward for a basket, then rattled off the rest of the Patriots' points to finish with 34 for the night to drop Horseheads to 11-1 for the season.

"She's a great player, and she works her butt off on offense and defense," Patriots coach Kristin Lemon told The Press & Sun-Bulletin. "It's kind of her reward. She's the girl I want to have the ball at the end of the game. We have other kids who can step up and do what they need to do, but with her experience, she's got ice in her veins."

Coach accused: Commack girls track coach Bryan Tornee surrendered to Suffolk County police yesterday and was charged with sexually abusing a 15-year-old female student, WABC-TV reported.

Police investigated after a student told staff that Tornee took her to a motel in Deer Park and sexually abused her in December, the TV station reported.

Tornee is a part-time janitor both Commack and the Locust Valley district.

Catching up: I wanted to take a second to catch up on a couple of noteworthy basketball games from earlier in the week:

Jayvaughn Pinkston scored 34 points and grabbed 16 rebounds Monday, but Half Hollow Hills West still scored a 75-72 win over Bishop Loughlin in overtime at the High School Invitational at Baruch College. Tobias Harris produced 19 points and seven rebounds in the victory before fouling out in the OT period.

Bishop Ford knocked off the No. 1 St. Michael Academy 48-45 as sophomore Brittany Lewis made two critical free throws with :44 to play.

"I was freaking out," Lewis said of her only points of the game. "I don’t like pressure free throws … I just took deep breaths and said it was just like practice. I guess it worked."
