Football two-minute read: Games of Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009
Kicking off: With SATs scheduled for Saturday morning, this proved to be a busy Sunday for football action. So here's an extra edition of the two-minute read:

First down: Cardinal Hayes senior running back Jeramiah Kobena put up a career-high six touchdowns in a 42-28 triumph against St. John the Baptist.

Kobena, who has committed to Syracuse University, scored on runs of 45, 75, 3, 5, and 20 yards. He also ran a punt back 85 yards for a touchdown en route to 361 all-purpose yards — 196 on rushing attempts.

Gallo Henson chipped in with 107 yards and a 15-yard touchdown on five catches plus two sacks and nine tackles.

Second down: Lefty, 5-foot-7 QB Joaquin DeJesus ran for TDs covering 7 and 51 yards and also threw a 51-yard TD pass as DeWitt Clinton erned a 37-0 victory against Flushing.

"He’s a gutsy kid,” coach Howard Langley told The New York Post after DeJesus finished with 83 yards on the ground and 92 through the air.

The Governors, 7-2 a year ago, have already beaten Staten Island powers Susan Wagner and New Dorp this season.

"We’re not afraid of anybody," Langley said. "Blow the whistle and kick it off."

Third down: Brooklyn Tech was able to grind out 174 rushing yards and upset Canarsie 24-14. Denzel McLarty ran for 85 yards and a touchdown for the Engineers, who got three sacks from Michael Plonski.

Canarsie QB Jarrel Turner threw for 227 yards but was intercepted twice and sacked seven times. And Syracuse-bound Steven Rene ran for a TD but also lost a fumble.

Fourth down: Brian Glazewski turned a fake punt at the Hackley 41 into 17 yards and a first down, sealing Rye Country Day's 33-27 win.

Hackley had rallied from a 33-13 deficit with a pair of scores in a six-minute span, but Glazewski's run punctuated a drive that ran off the final 4:48.

"Brian made a big play," coach John Calandros told The Journal News. "When we came out for that play, (Hackley) was yelling ‘Watch the fake.' But he made the right decision. That's just Brian being Brian."

Glazewski finished with 17 carries for 208 yards and three TDs.

The stat sheet: Caleb Gilligan-Evans rushed 18 times for

151 yards as Archbishop Stepinac beat Bishop Ford 21-0.

Back from a week off due to a thigh bruise, Ashton Ghaffaar ran for two touchdowns for undefeated Poly Prep in a 35-0 win vs. Hopkins, Conn. Devante Wheeler threw two touchdown passes.

Quick kicks: Another precinct has weighed in on Josh Keyes' massive statistical day, adding some interesting perspective to the story that has become the talk of Section 2.

As I noted yesterday, Keyes ran for 402 yards and eight touchdowns as Chatham beat Watervliet 56-14. Will Montgomery of The Troy Record took exception to the pinball-machine numbers, particularly because one of the TDs was a 65-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.

Times Union reporter James Allen blogged on the performance, and his initial thoughts triggered a landslide of reader reactions that led to Allen tacking on additional thoughts.

Among the things Allen pointed out: Chatham coach Mark Dwyer told Allen that Keyes wasn't supposed to get the ball literally moments after the 65-yard run, and the junior carried five times over the first two possessions of the third quarter but the long TD was his only attempt of the fourth quarter.

And only two of Keyes' 28 TDs this fall have come in the fourth quarter of games. The other was against Voorheesville in a relatively close game.

Take a minute to read the whole thread. It's a good discussion.

Scoreboard: The list of scores, compiled by NYSSWA member Steve Grandin, can be found here.
