Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009: Lansing football coach steps down after 2-2 start
Leading off today: Lansing football coach Bob Brantner has resigned for undisclosed reasons following a 2-2 start and will be replaced by assistant Tom Policay, The Press & Sun-Bulletin reported today.

Brantner informed his players of the decision on Tuesday.

"I just want to thank everybody that’s been so supportive to me and I can’t say how much I appreciate it," Brantner told the newspaper. "My words to them yesterday were just that get out there and keep working hard and win some games. I love everyone one of those guys on that team and this was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do."

Lansing AD John Taylor praised Brantner's dedication.

"He did a great job with the kids; he loved them," he told the paper. "Other than that he felt like he wanted to step down at this time. He did nothing wrong."

Lansing is coming off a 34-15 loss to Southern Springs after returns to action Friday vs. Dryden.

Coach under fire: Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake girls soccer coach Brian Bold faces possible disciplinary action after allegedly swearing at an opposing player, The Times Union reported.

Athletic director Bob McGuire is investigating what took place last week during a game against Bethlehem. Approached after his team's game with Shaker on Tuesday, Bold told the paper he had no comment, and coaches and administrators from both districts have not commented.

Burnt Hills' 2-1 triumph in overtime snapped Bethlehem's 38-game league winning streak dating to 2006. Burnt Hills has won four straight Section 2 championships.

Asked for details about the incident, McGuire told the paper "both teams weren't saints."

Bethlehem AD John DeMeo said he has spoken with McGuire, and, "This is being handled internally between Bethlehem and Burnt Hills. I'm confident (Burnt Hills) will take the proper action."

East Rochester still cruising: Defending NYSPHSAA Class C field hockey champion East Rochester had a rare close call yesterday en route to a 1-0 victory against Fairport in overtime.

Taryn Schawillie scored a minute into overtime as the Bombers ran their winning streak against Section 5 opponents to 101 games. ER is 7-0 this fall, outscoring opponents by a 37-0 margin. Schawillie has scored 17 times.

30 in a row: Jackie Gilley's goal midway through the second half sparked Davenport to a 4-1 victory vs. Downsville, extending its girls soccer unbeaten streak to 30 games. Gilley also finished with two assists as Davenport outshot Downsville 20-1.

The Wildcats went 20-0-1 last season, dropping a post-tie shootout to Edmeston after the Section 4 Class D final for the right to advance to the state tournament.. They are 9-0 this fall.

Easy come, easy go: Canton thought it had snapped a losing streak covering 101 weeks when it scored a 26-6 football victory against St. Lawrence over the weekend.

The thrill of victory, which the Golden Bears hadn't experienced since Oct. 12, 2007, didn't last long. Running back Kyle Nason, who rushed for 91 yards and scored a touchdown in Saturday's game, was declared ineligible on Monday, requiring Canton to forfeit, The Daily Times reported.

Nason's ineligibility stemmed from his transfer from St. Lawrence before the season without a corresponding change of address.

The forfeit improves St. Lawrence's record to 2-2.

Catching up: A few items from the weekend were overlooked. So, without further delay . . .

Cornwall's Aisling Cuffe posted the No. 2 time ever at Bowdoin Park — home of the Federation meet as well as past Nike Cross National qualifiers — with a 17:38.2 performance at the Bowdoin Invitational.

Marcellus senior QB Will Fiacchi went 24-for-41 for 519 yards ina 41-27 victory over South Jefferson. That puts him at No. 3 on the state list for single-game yardage.

Fayetteville-Manlius is bypassing the McQuaid Invitational this weekend. That has to be a letdown for Saugus (Calif.) High, which likely had the F-M girls in mind when they made the decision to fly in. Respected observer Marc Bloom has F-M ranked first and Saugus second in his national top 25.

Extra points: Half Hollow Hills West basketball star Tobias Harris has his list of college suitors down to Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Syracuse, Tennessee and West Virginia. He made a visit to Syracuse over the weekend. He received visits from 11 coaches over eight days early this month to help narrow the list. . . Iona Prep's Brian Voelkel, a second-team NYSSWA all-state pick in Class A, will continue his basketball career at Vermont next fall. That's a "good get" for Catamounts coach Mike Lonergan. . . . I lost the link, but Newsday reported that Achraf Yacoubou of Long Island, the only sophomore on last season’s All-Island basketball team, broke an ankle but is expected to be ready by Thanksgiving.
