Football two-minute read: Games of Saturday, Sept. 12
Kicking off: Brentwood quarterback Alex Corporan shook off a hard hit to his right thigh to engineer a 29-28 victory over Longwood yesterday in a Section 11 football opener.

Brentwood built a 22-0 lead before Longwood responded with three fourth-quarter touchdowns to force overtime. Corporan, who returned in the final minute of regulation following the injury, then hit Christopher Jean Pierre on a 10-yard fade on the first play of overtime, and Estaban Arp kicked the extra point.

Longwood responded with a TD of its own, but the extra-point kick failed.

"Coach told me that playmakers make plays," Corporan told Newsday after going 16-for-29 for 220 yards and two TDs. "I did what I had to do. It was a fade to the left and 'T.O.' did what he had to do."

Jean Pierre caught seven passes for 128 yards in the victory. Longwood backup QB Eric Lee had rallied his team in the second half and finished 11-for-19 for 217 yards.

First down: Watertown did not share Brentwood's good fortune in the QB resiliency department in a 20-17 loss in which Carthage drove 63 yards to Patrick Gibbons' 1-yard TD run with 1:44 to go.

Watertown lost both its starting quarterback, junior Tyler Augliano, and his backup, senior Sean Scordo, to injuries. Coach Vince Williams had to resort to senior tight end Adam McNulty taking all the snaps in the second half.

Augliano drove Watertown 80 yards in 12 plays for a lead that grew to 14-0 early in the second quarter, but he exited with a collarbone injury late in first quarter.

"I really thought we had something special going with Tyler," Williams told The Daily Times. "When Sean went down, we asked Adam if he could play (quarterback) and he said yes."

Scordo, a two-way player, suffered an ankle injury defending a pass play just before the half.

Second down: The 2007 state champ (Walton) now resides in Class C. The 2008 state champ (Maple Grove) is 1-1 and hasn't been able to get its offense untracked.

Dundee seems to be telling the New York football community its ready to represent the left end of the state in Class D at the Carrier Dome in Novermber. The Scots rolled up 308 yards on the ground and 101 through the air in just 29 snaps to rout Mynderse 70-8.

Senior Steven Webb carried nine times for 194 yards in the first half and scored TDs on runs covering 9, 4, 48, 20 and 61 yards. QB Thomas Pratt III was 4-for-4 with and two scoring strikes, and Ryan Ballard scored on a rush, a reception and an 85-yard kickoff return.

Dundee, which opened with a 71-0 rout of Geneva DeSales last week, dropped a 57-12 decision to Maple Grove in the 2008 New York State Public High School Athletic Association quarterfinals.

Third down: Aquinas, which has subscribed to a six-yards-and-a-cloud-of-FieldTurf approach to offense for the past several seasons, served noticed that it has just the man to start putting the ball in air.

Manny Magliocco threw two touchdown passes to Chris Bostick (brother of '08 QB Ben Bostick) and finished 11-for-14 for 155 yards in a 33-7 home victory vs. Union-Endicott.

"When we lost to Sweet Home last year (in the state quarterfinals) we realized that we’ve got to get people off us," Aquinas coach Chris Battaglia told the Democrat and Chronicle.

Oh, Mike Messina still rolled up 151 yards in 24 carries (plus a highlight-reel punt return in the fourth quarter), but Magliocco was throwing to Bostick and Anthony Bianchi as Plan A rather than an afterthought.

Magliocco's father was the Aquinas QB 30 years ago, and brother Mark Jr. was the New York State Sportswriters Association Class A player of the year after leading the Little Irish to the 2001 state championship.

By the way, U-E received a scare in the third quarter as Rutgers recruit Jordan Thomas limped off the field after an awkward slip and fall while returning a kick. It was diagnosed as a cramp, and he returned to action in the

fourth quarter.

Fourth down: Another year, another slow start for New Rochelle. Not that three opening-day losses in six years have ever slowed down one of the state's strongest Class AA programs.

The Huguenots, who lost a triple-OT thriller to Carmel in the 2008 opener, fended off host Mount Vernon to earn a 10-7 victory despite giving away three second-half fumbles in steady rain and kick off defense of their three straight Section 1 championships.

"The game didn't reflect how we practiced," Huguenots coach Lou DiRienzo told The Journal News. "I think we looked better in June and at our camps this summer. It was an ugly day; the field was ugly. It's a win and I'm happy we're 1-0. But we have to get better offensively."

New Rochelle's touchdown on a short Xavier Walker run was set up by an early 25-yard throw from Lewis Edney to Jonny McGhee, the starting quarterback in 2007-08.

Quick kicks: Hey guys, nice of you to help but I'm pretty sure your coach can take it from here.

With Syracuse CBA holding just a 7-0 lead at the time, several players spoke up at halftime with play-calling suggestions they thought might work against Henninger.

Joe Casamento, more or less the architect of sophisticated passing schemes adopted by various Central New York teams over recent years, humored his boys and called a trap play for senior tailback Fajri Jackson that turned into a 59-yard scoring scamper 1:13 into the third-quarter to jumpstart the Brothers' 35-6 victory.

"We just tried to hit them a little bit just inside the ends to see if we could get a couple of big plays," he told The Post-Standard. "It worked out for us."

Senior receiver Jared DePalma finished with three CBA TDs. The gem was a direct-snap counter he asked to run; it went 95 yards for a 21-6 lead in the third quarter.

CBA is off to a 2-0 start but reeling on the injury front. Receiver/linebacker Bryant Moore tore up a knee last week, and No. 1 receiver John Dunmore exited yesterday with what may be a dislocated elbow.

The stat sheet: Tailback Alton Richardson ran for 99 yards and scored three TDs as Fort Hamilton built a 38-0 lead and then held on to beat Staten Island Curtis 38-24.

Justin Becker scored the first five touchdowns of the game for Westmoreland, which dropped down to Class D this fall, in a 52-6 romp vs. Oriskany. Becker carried five times for 149 yards and caught three passes for 61 more.

Herricks' losing streak ended at 14 games as backup holder Tommy Graef ran in a botched conversion snap with 1:04 to go to beat Hempstead 21-19.

"My heart sank to my stomach," new Herricks coach Mike Yoo told Newsday. "But I knew that Tommy got a handle on the ball. He looked to the end zone right away, turned it on and got in there."

Canarsie forged a tie on the last play from scimmage of regulation, but Abraham Lincoln recovered for a 34-32 win on overtime PSAL action.

Syracuse-bound Steven Rene was stopped on a two-point conversion at the end of regulation, and Lincoln opened OT with a 20-yard scoring scramble by QB Andrew Vitale, followed by a two-point conversion. Canarsie countered with a TD of its own, but Jarrel Turner's throw for a conversion failed.
