Thursday, July 2, 2009: Syracuse lines up yet another New York football recruit
Leading off today: It doesn't appear the football staff at Syracuse University is squeezing in a lot of golf this summer. Whether it translates to success on the field two or three years down the road remains to be seen, but you have to respect the way new coach Doug Marrone's staff has rolled up its sleeves and hit the recruiting trail.

A day after picking up an oral commitment from Pittsbugh running back Dom Timbers, Syracuse picked up two more recruits yesterday. Brooklyn Canarsie's Steven Rene, a 5-foot-8 running back and defensive back, and Ramapo (N.J.) kicker Ross Krautman were the latest to make commitments to play for the Orange, The Post-Standard reported.

Rene reportedly had offers from Temple, Rutgers, Boston College, Oregon and Hofstra. Pittsburgh and UConn were also recruiting him. Krautman is the brother of former SU kicker Ricky Krautman.

Maginn moves quickly: JV basketball coach Orlando DiBacco has been promoted to replace Rich Hurley, who stepped down at Bishop Maginn two weeks ago to spend more time with his family and pursue an advanced degree.

"The bar is set high, but the one thing to know about me is I'm a competitor," DiBacco said. "I can't guarantee wins or losses, but on Tuesdays and Fridays this program will be prepared and ready to compete. As a coach, that is all you can ask for."

Shen standout injured: Karly DeSimone had knee surgery Monday for the second time in about 15 months, effectively ending her senior soccer season at Shenendehowa before it begins, The Times Union reported.

DeSimone tore her anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee last month. She injured her right knee early last year and was able to return to the field Sept. 25, finishing the season with a team-high 14 goals that included five in a sectional win vs. Schenectady.

All-Sport Championship: We took the wrappings off our inaugural NYSSWA All-Sport Championship very early this morning, crowning Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake as the outstanding New York State Public High School Athletic Association school of the year.

BH-BL won NYSPHSAA championships in boys and girls cross country and also placed its football team in the state finals during the 2008-09 school year. In addition, the school picked up points in girls alpine schooling and volleyball.

Full details were posted to the site this morning.

Dynasty debate: The Daily News published a good "talker" this week by crowning PSAL boys soccer champion Martin Luther King as New York City's reigning dynasty. The Knights defeated Beacon last fall on penalty kicks, 4-1, for their 11th city title in 13 years.

Among other programs considered: Cardozo girls track, St. Francis Prep girls tennis, Tottenville softball, Murry Bergtraum girls basketball and Abraham Lincoln boys basketball.

The champion of champions: MaxPreps.com does a fun story each year compiling the most prolific winners in high school sports, and Honolulu's Punahou snared top honors again by winning 21 Hawaii state championships to bring the school's haul to 389 titles since 1958.

Technically, Punahou also won a national title when Buff 'n' Blue graduate Barack Obama won the presidential election in November.

They certainly do things a little bit differently in Hawaii, because some of Punahou's championships came in girls canoe paddling, mixed canoe paddling, girls wrestling, boys judo, girls judo and girls water polo.

The rest of the MaxPreps top five: San Jose (Calif.) Archbishop Mitty, Jacksonville (Fla.) Bolles, Portland (Ore.) Jesuit and Scottsdale (Aiz.) Notre Dame.

Minor victory for Kentucky coach: A school district's report on the 2008 heat-related death of a football player has found that an embattled Louisville, Ky., coach and his staff did not break any high school athletic rules.

The Jefferson County Public Schools report was released on the August death of sophomore Max Gilpin, 15, was released yesterday. The report has no bearing on the criminal case; Pleasure Ridge Park coach David Jason Stinson has been charged with reckless homicide.

The report concluded that Stinson and his assistants may not have used "appropriate means" to motivate the players but did not break any athletic rules.
