Saturday, June 13, 2009: Previewing today's NYSPHSAA boys lacrosse finals
Leading off today: The New York State Public High School Athletic Association boys lacrosse tournament winds down today with a championship tripleheader today at Marina Auto Stadium in Rochester beginning at 11 a.m.

Here are a few notes on today's games:

Spreading the wealth: New York began its three-class format in lacrosse in 2000, and today marks the first time that six different sections are supplying the finalists. In fact, it will be only the third time that the champions came from three different sections.

Orchard Park and Niskayuna are trying to make history for their respective regions. Sections 6 and 2 have never won boys lacrosse championships. Penn Yan (2001, Class C) is the only Section 5 school wo have taken home the hardware.

Haven't I seen you before? Today's six finalists have made 14 appearances in championship games, but the tripleheader contains only one rematch: LaFayette beat Manhasset in the 2005 Class C matchup, 10-9.

Manhasset has been to five previous finals, followed by LaFayette (3), West Islip (3), Orchard Park (2), Niskayuna (1). Canandaigua is the only team making its first appearance in a title game.

Double trouble: Last spring, West Genesee became the first school to win New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships in football and lacrosse in the same school year. Orchard Park, led by the father-and-son tandem of Gene and senior attackman Jeff Tundo, is seeking to do it today.

Class A, Orchard Park Quakers (Sec. 6, 21-2) vs. West Islip Lions (Sec. 11, 21-1): Orchard Park made back-to-back appearances in the final in 2000 and '01, losing each to Long Island representatives. West Islip made three trips in four years, bringing home trophies in '06 and '07 via victories against West Genesee.

Orchard Park began the week ranked No. 3 in Class A by the New York State Sportswriters Association and has moved up to No. 2 in the LaxPower.com computer rankings. West Islip is second and first, respectively.

Both schools have father-and-soon combos. OP head coach Gene Tundo and son Jeff are winding up their great run together today, and Shane Craig plays for Scott Craig at West Islip.

More about Orchard Park: Senior Artie Marrapese scored four goals and an assists in Thursday's 8-7 victory against Ithaca in the semifinals at St. John Fisher College. Senior Mike Moran won eight faceoffs in that game and the Quakers were 9-for-19 overall vs. Gabe Mendola, who had won all 12 of his draws in the Little Red's upset of West Genesee.

OP seniors who've committed to Division I colleges: attack Jeff Tundo (Ohio State) and middie Artie Marrapese (St. Joseph's).

More tidbits: Coach Gene Tundo begins the day with 455 career victories with Orchard Park, which has won 15 straight sectional chapionships. . . The Quakers beat Class B finalist Canandaigua, 5-4, back on April 3. Their loss was by 1 12-9 score to Class B Corning East early last month on neutral turf at Alfred University. . . . Players point to a mid-April trip as a key moment to the season. OP defeated Dulany, Md., 9-4, and Manhem Township, Pa., 13-5, on consecutive days during spring break.

More about West Islip: Senior attackman Shane Craig scored four goals and Nicky Galasso had three (plus an assist) on Thursday to lead the Lions past Yorktown, 13-8. Galasso scored 18 seconds before halftime after Yorktown had rallied from 5-1 to 5-4. Andrew Hodgson and Brian Badolato each scored two goals and added an assist.

West Islip seniors who've committed to Division I colleges: middie Ian Braddish (North Carolina), middie Kevin Dolan (Air Force), goalie Ryan Zaremba (Army) and defender Mime McCormack (Yale).

More tidbits: West Islip has won six straight Suffolk County championships. . . . The only West Islip loss was by an 8-7 margin in OT to Ward Melville in early May. It was avenged by a 9-5 margin June 4 in the Section 11 final. . . . There was no bottom-feeding during the regular season ad Middle Country (4-12) was the only team on the schedule that did not win at least six games. . . . The 2009 honors have not been announced yet, but Galasso was named All-LI by Newsday as a sophomore after picking up 60 goals and 57 assists.

Class B, Niskayuna Silver Warriors (Sec. 2, 22-0) vs. Canandaigua Braves (Sec. 5, 21-2): Niskayuna's previous trip to the finals resulted in a 15-2 loss to West Genesee in 2005 was in Class A.

Niskayuna began the week ranked No. 1 in Class B by the NYSSWA and stands No. 2 in the LaxPower.com

The Braves are on a 19-game winning streak since losing to Corning East, 9-6, on April 17 to fall to 2-2 for the season. The other loss was to Orchard Park in the opener. . . . The key win may have come against Fairport, 10-7, on May 23, when the Class A REd Raiders were playing some of their best lacrosse of the season.

Class C, LaFayette Lancers (Sec. 3, 23-0) vs. Manhasset Indians (Sec. 8, 19-1): Manhasset captured Class B in 1995 and Class C in 2004. LaFayette was the champion in 2003 and '05.

Saying that Manhasset plays in Class C is midleading. The regular-season schedule included a Class A opponet, five from Class B and games against Darien (Conn.) plus CHSAA powerhouse Chaminade. The sole loss was by 11-10 in overtime to Comsewogue back on April 7.
