Friday, June 5, 2009: West Islip, Yorktown stay on course in boys Class A lacrosse
Leading off today: Another year, another Section 11 final between two great boys lacrosse programs.

And another victory for West Islip, the state's second-ranked Class A team.

The Lions roared to a 9-5 victory over Ward Melville at Stony Brook University to win thier fifth straight Suffolk County championship — all over Ward Melville. The'll play Hicksville on Tuesday in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association quarterfinals.

Nicky Galasso, a junior All-American who says he'll enroll at North Carolina in the fall of 2010, scored as time expired in the first half to tie the game, and West Islip took command with three goals in third quarter. Galasso finished with three goals and an assist, and Andrew Hodgson connected for four goals.

Sayville shines: Sayville captured its first sectional lacrosse title in the ninth season of the program, topping Smithtown West, 11-9, in the Suffolk County Class B final.

Doug Meehan took a pass from Charlie Podgurski with 5:30 left to break a 9-9 tie with his fourth goal of the game.

All-Long Island quarterback Dillon Boos scored three unassisted goals.

Business as usual at Yorktown: Lakeland/Panas built a 9-4 lead in the third quarter, gave it all back and took the lead again, 10-9, on a goal by Shawn Honovich with 3:49 to go.

And then Yorktown played like Yorktown in the Section 1 Class A lacrosse final. For the uninitiated, the Cornhuskers have appeared in 30 straight sectional finals — and won 28 of them.

Kevin Interlicchio connected with :52 to go, forcing overtime, and John Rangan won it for Yorktown with a goal in sudden death. The 11-10 final score was the Cornhuskers' only lead of the day.

In the Section 1 Class B game, Somers downed John Jay, 14-9, to snap the Indians' streak of four championships.

West Genesee girls advance: Two days after a thrilling win over Baldwinsville in the Section 3 Class A final, West Genesee opened NYSPHSAA tournament play with a 17-7 girls lacrosse triumph over Ithaca.

The Wildcats broke to an 11-1 lead in the first half, and Maria DiFato finished with three goals and three assists. Bre Hudgins had four goals and Lauren Michaels contributed a hat trick.

Long-standing record toppled: Considering the steady stream of distance standouts to come out of the area in recent years, it says something that the Section 2 record in the 3,200-meter run lasted 23 years.

Until yesterday, the first day of the state qualifier at Johnstown.

Shenendehowa’s Alex Leuchanka won in 9:06.3 to knock a second off the mark of Jeff Dybas of Queensbury. Of course, running a less blazing two miles wasn't an option with Otis Ubriaco of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (9:09.9), Dan Harris of Shen (9:12.8) and Demetri Goutos of Saratoga (9:14.2) in pursuit.

Leuchanka's time is the fastest in the state this season, with the NYSPHSAA championships coming up next weekend at Cicero-North Syracuse.

In addition, Shene's Evan Palmer pulled a throws double of 54-6½ in the shot and 159-1 in the discus to win Division I in both.

Saratoga senior Alex King, in hs first season in the sport, won the Division I long jump with a leap of 22-10 3/4 to break his own school record.

Nail-biters in softball: Eighth-grader and cleanup hitter Lacey Clark hit a two-out single with the bases loaded in

In Canandaigua, Northstar Christian surrendered all of its 6-0 lead and then rallied for an 11-6 win in eight innings against Geneva DeSales in the Section 5 Class D final.

It was Northstar's third straight championship.

Jen Alden delivered a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh for DeSales, but Northstar responded with a five-run eighth, plating all of the runs after two were out. Casey Harris and Sampson produced run-scoring singles.

What more can you ask? The first week of June is packed with championship games as most spring sports race to determine sectional champions ahead of state meets, Regents exams and blissful summer fun.

But we can't let this one fly under the radar, because it completes a superb Section 4 triple crown.

Dan Many threw a two-hitter and drove in four runs for South Kortright in a 7-1 Class D championship victory over Jefferson at SUNY Oneonta.

It gave SK championships in soccer, basketball and baseball in the same school year, and all three teams were coached by Bob VanValkenburgh. His basketball team earned the NYSPHSAA Class D championship in Glens Falls in March.

According to Tom Coddington at The Walton Reporter, the teams are 61-4-1 for the year and eight baseball starters played on all three championship teams. Five of them formed the starting line-up in basketball, and all were also starters in soccer.

"We didn't expect this," Many told The Daily Star. "The first day of soccer practice, we weren't really thinking that, 'Hey, we're going to win three sectional titles this year.' But we worked hard and got to it."

From the department of irony, the Rams' baseball season continues Tuesday in Syracuse against Hamilton — which knocked SK out of the state soccer quarterfinals in November, 5-1.

"This is the year you dream of," VanValkenburgh said. "It's just a dream season, just a great group of athletes who want to win."

More baseball: Jaime Schultz finally allowed a hit after more than a dozen innings of flawless work dating to the last game of the regular season, but Maple Hill still cruised past Cambridge for the Section 2 Class DD final, 14-0.

The right-hander had closed out the season with four no-hit innings against Rensselaer, held Voorheesville hitless in the Wildcats’ sectional quarterfinal win and was untouched in relief against Lake George in the semifinals. Finally, Cambridge’s Kyle Parmenter singled in the first inning of yesterday's game.

But Schultz finished with 11 strikeouts in five-plus innings, hit a solo home run in the top of the first and scored four runs.

“He is the best player I’ve had by far and he’s one of the top players I’ve seen in this area,” Maple Hill coach Rico Frese told The Troy Record.

More tomorrow: I had to leave a lot of good stuff on the cutting-room floor just to be able to post today's blog at a reasonable time. I'm hoping to come back early tomorrow with a summary of other good stuff I found today and than (hopefully) return to the keyboard after my FOXSports.com shift to recap Friday action.
