Saturday, May 2, 2009: Sandy Creek's league winning streak ends at 116 softball games
Leading off today: Sandy Creek finally lost a Frontier League softball game on Thursday after 116 victories in a row as Jenna Kraeger of South Lewis threw a no-hitter in a 2-0 victory.

Kraeger had a perfect game until a Sandy Creek batter reached base on an error with two outs in the seventh inning.

Abby Black of South Lewis supplied the offense with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth off Chelsea Claflin, who finished with a two-hitter.

Third no-hitter in five days: Elba right-hander Sarah Schwartzmeyer pitched her third softball no-hitter in five days during a 4-1 win over Byron-Bergen yesterday.

Schwartzmeyer struck out 17 batters. She no-hit Pembroke on Monday and Attica on Wednesday. Elba is 8-2 for the season, with six games on the schedule next week.

Long day at the office: Grand Island sophomore right Ben Tomkins went the distance in a 4-2 victory over Niagara Falls at Sal Maglie Stadium. Tomkins allowed 11 hits and two earned runs, and if you're wondering how he could manage to get through 12 innings, here's a clue: With no walks and just one strikeout he didn't go very deep into many counts.

"After watching Ben in three sports now, I’ve learned he’s just a gamer,” Vikings coach Dean Santorio told the Niagara Gazette. "He does all the little things well and makes the most out of what abilities he has."

Baseball players punished: One Spackenkill baseball player has been thrown off the team and seven others were suspended for three weeks following a weekend incident that a school official said involved drugs, the Poughkeepsie Journal reported.

Dr. Lois Colletta, the Spackenkill schools superintendent, said the incident involved marijuana during a trip to Cooperstown last weekend to play Washingtonville. Colletta said the eight students also face school suspensions.

Just four years removed from a state championship season, Spackenkill coach Don Neise was left with 11 players for a game Wednesday at Pine Plains. "We're ready to go," he told the paper. "We're just going to try to keep getting better every day, and be as competitive as we can."

Meanwhile, The Daily Gazette in Schenectady reported the Northville JV baseball season was shut down Tuesday when school officials said players refused to identify the teammate who defecated in the locker room shower.

Superintendent Kathy Dougherty said the players chose to turn in their uniforms rather than turn in the culprit from the incident that took place after the team returned from an away game last week. Principal Michael Healey said school officials believe team members know the identity of the offender.

School staying closed this week: The Fabius-Pompey Central School District will stay closed this week to comply with revised federal guidelines for schools where swine flu has been identified.

Dr. Cynthia Morrow, Onondaga County's health commissioner, said she and schools Superintendent Tim Ryan made a joint decision to keep the district closed after the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention changed its school closing guidelines Friday, The Post-Standard reported. The district closed its schools beginning Thursday.

Stephenson, St. John's not a match: Abraham Lincoln guard Lance Stephenson, a first-team all-state pick and the Basketball Coaches Association of New York co-player of year, has crossed St. John's off his list of prospective schools, The Daily News reported.

The paper also said Maryland is off Stephenson's list of prospective schools. With Kansas already having locked up Xavier Henry, Stephenson is running out of top-shelf options.

The rumor picking up steam these days is that Stephenson could end up at Arizona, where former Xavier coach Sean Miller has inherited a program that is in shambles. Even just one season from Stephenson — it's widely believed he'll go pro after one season in college — would be a godsend for the Wildcats, who are virtually devoid of any veterans who can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Extra points: There's a New York connection to New Port Richey, Fla., lefty pitching sensation Patrick Schuster, who recently threw four straight no-hitters. The Daily News in Batavia discovered that his parents are 1973 Pembroke graduates Roger and Sharon Schuster. . . . Jim Brennan, who coached football at Glen Cove in the 1980s, died last week. He was 65. He was a teacher and administrator there for more than three decades.
