Tuesday, April 28, 2009: Swine flu shutdown affecting St. Francis Prep sports
Leading off today: The swine flu has shut down the entire school for the week, but its effect on the sports program at St. Francis Prep in Queens may last much longer.

The school was slated to re-open tomorrow, but health department officials today convinced school officials to keep the building closed through the coming weekend.

When classes do resume, The Daily News says the sports programs there remain up in the air because opponents may have reservations.

"I have heard from parents and they are extremely concerned," Xaverian baseball coach Dennis Canale told the paper ahead of scheduled games tomorrow and Thursday against St. Francis Prep. "We're going to have a meeting with our principal (this) morning and find out what we're going to do. If it were just up to me I might take a chance, but this is 27 kids."

St. Francis Prep postponed yesterday' game against Christ the King and today's vs. St. Edmund Prep.

St. Francis Prep AD Sal Fischetti says there have not been any reported cases of swine flu among athletes there. The school has undergone extensive cleaning in the break since the end of activities on Friday.

No-no streak snapped: Florida schoolboy ace Patrick Schuster had his string of baseball no-hitters broken at four today.

The lefty, who will attend the University of Florida in the fall, gave up a third-inning double to Gaither High's Drew Dotey, in Mitchell High's district tournament game in Clearwater, Fla.

Speaking of pitchers: You'd have to rate Maddie Coneys' varsity softball debut at Troy Catholic Central a resounding success. The sophomore fired a perfect game yesterday during a 6-0 victory against Schenectady and struck out 11 batters.

"In my 27 years of coaching, I swear this is the first perfect game I’ve ever seen," Catholic Central coach Jack O’Grady told The Record "This was really something and she was impressive."

Meanwhile, Arlington freshman Samantha Ferris threw her second straight no-hitter during a 5-0 win against Lakeland. Ferris, who struck out seven and walked two, had thrown her first career no-hitter Friday vs. Lincoln.

Throwing to her sister Samantha, Haldane's Chelsea Lisikatos fired her third no-hitter of the season, striking out 15 and walking none as the Blue Devils defeated Keio Academy, 15-0.

Perry streak reaches 100: The boys tennis team at Perry won its 100th consecutive match dating to June 6, 2001, with a 5-0 sweep of Warsaw. The Yellowjackets are 5-0 this season.

According to The Daily News in Batavia, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association lists the streak as a state record. However, the National Federation says Bay Shore won 173 in a row from 1965-74 and the

PSAL's Cardozo High won 141 straight from 1987-94.

Some 29 players have taken part in the streak for Rick Steiner, who is in his 27th season as coach.

Tri Valley League appealing: The effort by Utica Proctor and Rome Free Academy to change leagues hit a roadblock when superintendents of Tri Valley League schools filed an appeal of a Section 3 decision to allow the schools into their organization.

The Observer-Dispatch reported that the TVL went to the NYSPHSAA last week to reiterate its reasons for originally rejecting membership applications by Proctor and RFA over the winter: The schools' size would potentially create a competitive disparity in several sports.

Proctor and RFA, currently members of the Central New York Counties League, were expecting to migrate most of the sports teams to the TVL in the fall after Section 3 overruled the TVL. The move would allow significant reductions in travel time.

"I believe the state will hear the same arguments and come to the same conclusions, it’s best for the students and best for the schools,” Utica Superintendent James Willis told the paper. "Our students right now because of travel time to Auburn and Oswego, are on the bus two hours one way alone. It’s not good for education."

NYSPHSAA Executive Director Nina Van Erk confired her office received a letter from the TVL but declined to comment until she is able to review the request, the paper reported.

Football opponent needed: St. Joseph by the Sea football coach Greg Manos is trying to line up an opponent for the weekend of Sept. 12. The Vikings have an opening because of a Catholic High School Football League scheduling quirk.

Monas says the Vikings are willing to travel if that's what it takes to get a game scheduled.

E-mail him or call Manos at (718) 984-6500 (ext. 5336) if you have a lead on a possible opponent.

Coming up: Section 6's top three large-school baseball teams will be getting together this week. Clarence plays Canisius at Delaware Park on Thursday, Orchard Park is at Clarence on Friday and OP faces Canisius at Delaware Park on Saturday. On top of that, Canisius has a game next week against highly regarded St. Francis.

In a good intersectional girls lacrosse game this week, Canandaigua travels to West Genesee on Friday at 7 p.m.

Extra points: Ithaca's Bryan Small threw 55 feet to break Gary Hunter's 39-year-old school record in the shot put at the Waverly Invitational, where the Little Red won both team titles on Saturday. Hunter, whose 1970 mark was 53-6, coaches throws at the school. . . . The top senior boys lacrosse player in Section 6 will be honored each spring with the Tom Borrelli Memorial Award beginning this year to honor the former Buffalo News sportswriter who died late last year. A committee chaired by sportswriter Keith McShea will choose the area's top player after consulting with coaches and scouts.
