Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008: Shenendehowa girls pull an upset in cross country
Leading off today: Shenendehowa's varsity cross country teams earned a split at the Bowdoin Classic yesterday at Wappingers Falls, but it wasn't what most observers were expecting. The Lincroft (N.J.) Christian Brothers Academy boys pulled a mild upset by outgunning the Plainsmen, 80-94, but the Shen girls surprised Lincoln-Sudbury (Mass.), 55-60, for top honors.

Lincoln-Sudbury is regarded as the No. 1 team in the Northeast Region for the Nike Cross Country Nationals later this year. New York is a region by itself in the Nike structure.

Lizzie Predmore placed second in 18:27.8 to lead the way for Shenendehowa, ranked seventh in Class AA by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

More cross country: Marcellus' Chris Stogsdill won the large-schools race in 15:00.18 at the Baldwinsville Invitational, but Burnt Hills nipped the Bees for team honors, 38-47. In the girls large- schools race, a fourth-place performance by Danae Polsin (18:32.99) helped Baldwinsville (48) fend off Ithaca (61). The Beaver River boys and Tully girls took the small-school races.

The Honeoye Falls-Lima boys and Pittsford Mendon girls won the large-school classes in Marcus Whitman's Wildcat Invitational. HF-Lima junior and defending NYSPHSAA Class B champion Alex Deir won in 16:12. which was 11 seconds ahead of teammate and classmate Steve Mangan.

East Aurora swept team honors at its own invitational. The Blue Devils' Scott Anderson won the boys race in 15:02.9 to highlight a 50-81 triumph over Canisius. The East Aurora girls won comfortably over Fredonia, 32-139.

Brother and sister Evan (16:10.0) and Martina Tsembelis (19:57.4) of Grand Island swept individual honors in the small-schools races and overall at the Western N.Y. Cross Country Officials Invitational at Beaver Island State Park.

The home teams swept the large-school classes at the Suffern Invitational as senior Mike Periera clocked 16:04.8 to place fifth amongst the boys and lead the way to a 51-95 margin over Monroe-Woodbury. Suffern senior Shelby Greany (17:26.7) finished a quarter of a mile in front of the rest of the girls field.

Cicero-North Syracuse's Chris Buchanan (17:05) shaved 18 seconds off the course record at the New Hartford Invitational to hold off the host school's Ryan Millar by eight seconds.

St. A's, Bethlehem advance: Katherine Higgans scored twice in the second half to lift St. Anthony's, No. 3 in Class AA soccer according to the New York State Sportswriters Association, over No. 17 Vestal, 2-0, in the Hall of Fame Cup Tournament yesterday in Oneonta.

No. 7 Bethlehem improved to 8-0 with a 35-0 scoring margin by downing No. 19 Cicero-North Syracuse in the other first-round game. Taylor Teal and Kaitlyn Martin scored, and Keirsten Sweet stopped six shots for the shutout.

More girls soccer: Briana Tata scored four minutes into the second half on a direct kick for No. 2 Aquinas in a 1-0 victory over No. 10 Kenmore West in a pairing of teams that both fell to eventual state champ Greece Arcadia in the 2007 postseason. Aquinas' Jessica Mulholland made seven saves for the shutout.

Junior Brittany Kinmond scored all the goals as Spencerport (8-1) overwhelmed No. 8 Webster Thomas (5-1-2), 4-0, to win the Spencerport Tournament. Kinmond has 20 goals for the season.

Tamarac, No. 5 in Class B, and Stillwater, No. 6 in Class C, battled to a scoreless tie. "It was an offense-less game. It was like kissing your sister," Stillwater coach Jackie Blake told The Times Union. "It was a midfield experience. There was good 'D' on both sides of the ball."

Death in North Carolina: A Greenville, N.C., football player died after collapsing during a game Friday. A Pitt Memorial Hospital nursing supervisor said the cause of death for Jacquan Waller was not available.

J.H. Rose High players said Waller collapsed on the sideline after he was hit at the line of scrimmage and fumbled. He was taken from the game in an ambulance.
