Monday, June 9, 2008: Oppressive heat forces postponements on Long Island
Leading off today: Better safe than sorry.

That was the decision made on Long Island this afternoon as extreme late-spring temperatures caused the postponement of all high school games after Nassau and Suffolk counties issued full heat alerts.

"The temperature pushed the heat index over 95 for quite a while and once you get to the point where you look at it and watch it continue to rise you need to just move the games," Section 11 director Ed Cinelli told Newsday. "It's just getting hotter and the index keeps rising. We'll err on the side of caution."

Two girls NYSPHSAA lacrosse quarterfinals were moved to Tuesday at Stony Brook University. Shoreham-Wading River will play Manhasset at 5 p.m. in Class C and Northport facs Farmingdale in Class A at 7 p.m. Two state softball quarterfinals were postponed until Tuesday at the Mitchel Athletic Complex at 4 p.m. Port Jefferson and East Rockaway will meet in Class C. Hampton Bays and Carle Place are to play for the Class B crown.

State baseball quarterfinals in classes C and D, already postponed from Sunday due to lightning, were also shifted to Tuesday. To the north, Marlboro's Class B game against John F. Kennedy was pushed back to Wednesday.

A sweep for Bozzelli: McQuaid junior Dominic Bozzelli, already the NYSPHSAA boys golf champion, added the Federation title to his resume yesterday with a 2-under-par 70 at Mark Twain Golf Course in Elmira.

Bozzelli eagled two holes and finished five shots ahead of Jamie Sindelar, son of veteran PGA pro Joey Sindelar, to win the 24-player tournament.

Suzie Lee of Commack posted a two-round total of 151 to win the NYSPHSAA girls championship at Foxfire Golf Club in Baldwinsville. Dani Mullin of West Islip was second with a 152 and Whitesboro's Ariana Gaeta was third at 10-over 154.

New Jersey wins all-star game: The host team scored a 33-22 victory yesterday in the 11th annual New York-New Jersey All-Star Football Classic at Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J.

  •    Thirty-two players on New Jersey's 52-man roster have Division I scholarships, as opposed to six from New York according to Newsday's math.

Lansingburgh tailback Kenny Youngs scored on a one-yard run midway through the second quarter to cut New Jersey's lead to 14-6, and St. Anthony's Daniel Basil ran in the two-point conversion. The winners stretched in to 26-8 before New Rochelle's Markell Rice (Ray's brother) turned in a 79-yard interception and Youngs ran in the conversion.

New Jersey responded with an eight-play, 53-yard drive capped by a 2-yard run by William Washington that extended its lead to 33-16. Jeff Legree of Fort Hamilton then threw a 35-yard touchdown pass with 5:58 left for the final points.

DWI arrest: Mike Mezansky, a former Mamaroneck baseball star, has been charged with driving while intoxicated in a crash that left a 9-year-old boy critically injured. Mezansky, 18, allegedly steered around a Bee-Line bus and struck a neighborhood boy, William Powers, who was crossing the street at 7:45 a.m. Friday, The Journal News reported.

Powers is at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla and had been breathing with the help of a ventillator before regaining consciousness yesterday. He suffered a head injury, two broken legs and bruised lungs, the paper reported.

Mezansky, who attends Indiana University, graduated in 2007 after hitting .438 with four home runs and 38 RBI to earn League 1-A player of the year honors. He was also a goalie for the school's soccer team.

Extra points: Greene's Bill Case, the winningest girls’ basketball coach in Chenango County history, announced his resignation. Case posted 427 wins over 27 seasons and earned five Section 4 titles.
