NYSSWA All-State plaques

Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008: Corcoran's Marsh wins 400th girls basketball game
Leading off today: Syracuse Corcoran Coach Jim Marsh earned his 400th career win Tuesday with a 41-35 win against West Genesee in the Section 3 Class AA girls basketball quarterfinals.

Marsh, who has seven Section 3 and two state championships to his credit in 24 seasons at Corcoran, is the fifth Section 3 coach to reach the milestone. "It means I've been fortunate enough to be around some very special girls for some 20 years," he told The Post-Standard.

More Tuesday highlights: Kyle Kelly scored the winning goal in the third overtime as Glens Falls (12-13) earned a 2-1 victory over Bethlehem in a Section 2 Division II hockey semifinal. Bryan Mulcahy made 45 saves as Glens Falls advanced to the title game against Queensbury.

Senior Jules Doliscar of Holy Trinity was named the outstanding performer at the CHSAA wrestling championships, a qualifier for the state tournament March 8-9 in Rochester. He won the 160-pound final with a pin in 3:40 against Ryan Malloy of St. Joe's by the Sea.

McDonald's All-Americans: Four New York players are among 48 selections to participate in the McDonald's All American Basketball Games on March 26 at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. The boys game will be carried live by ESPN and the girls game by ESPNU.

New York's boys selections are Sylven Landesberg of Holy Cross and Kemba Walker of Rice. Those named to the girls squad were Shenise Johnson (Rush-Henrietta) and Samantha Prahalis of Commack.

Keep an eye on this: Liverpool may end up teaching a valuable lesson to school districts across New York next week. The school board is putting a $44.5 renovation proposition in front of voters, and a lot of them are not happy that repairs to four buildings are being voted on in one "take

it or leave it" vote that includes a new athletic stadium with artificial turf.

"This is a 21-year payout for the longevity of this project, yet the field is only going to last 15 possibly? It just doesn't seem right," district resident Rosann Meagher-Champ observed.

She's being optimistic. Even under optimum conditions, a new field will probably last a maximum of 10 years in New York's rugged weather. Residents are going to end up spending something close to $1 million to replace it again — with another eight or 10 years of payments remaining on the old rug.

With the economy the way it is, school districts are playing with poison when the mix educational improvements with athletic projects in a single proposition because voters resent being held hostage. Treat the taxpayers like adults by allowing them to vote on the major components separately and you might be able to get "yes" votes across the board. But lump everything together in the largest project ever proposed in Liverpool and you risk having everything shot down.

A homeowner with a $100,000 house will pay nearly $39 a year or about a total of $816 if the project is approved.

Extra points: A State Supreme Court judge yesterday dismissed a suit by the father of a Ward Melville senior who contended his son was suspended unfairly in November for the remainder of the school year and was missing out on the chance to earn a baseball scholarship. Justice Ralph Costello dismissed the suit and suggested that Joseph Urso appeal to the state commissioner of education on behalf oh his son, Aaron. . . . Cap Carey of The Watertown Times profiled Canton wrestler Aaron Brown, who attends Hermon-DeKalb. Brown, taking aim at his fourth Section X wrestling championship, has made it all the way back after being diagnosed with a brain tumor six years ago.
