NYSSWA All-State plaques

John Moriello's NYSSWA blog
Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008: Stuyvesant track coach, two athletes seriously hurt in crash
Leading off today: A member of the Stuyvesant High girls track team was paralyzed and another student was seriously injured when a van driven by their coach flipped over on a Vermont highway, police said.

The accident on I-91 near Hartford, Vt., on Saturday afternoon also left the coach hospitalized. State police said the van, which had nine aboard including the driver, was headed to a meet at Dartmouth College when it suddenly veered onto a median near the junction with I-89 and rolled over on its side.

Lt. Chris Dube of the Hartford Fire Department said two girls were partially ejected. The most seriously injured student was identified as junior Valerie Piro, 17.

According to The Daily News, the other seriously hurt student is junior Lucia Hsiao, also 17, who suffered a broken arm, fractured neck and a bruised lung. First-year coach Erin Taylor, 29, also suffered a fractured neck.

Piro, Hsiao and Taylor were taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

More all-state football: West Genesee quarterback Tim Moran and William Floyd running back Brock Jackolski share the Class AA player of the year award announced today by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

In Class A, the player of the year is Lansingburgh running back Kenny Youngs.

The NYSSWA released its complete Class AA and A all-star teams today. Those selections and the picks for Classes B, C and D can be viewed here.

Lansing loses its first: Lansing, ranked 15th in boys Class B basketball, suffered its first loss as Groton scored a 54-49 victory last night.

Groton trailed by 44-32 entering the fourth quarter. Peter Jackson went 5-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final minutes to finish with 17 points.

In girls action, Ayanda Ntombela made a 15-foot jump shot with eight seconds left in the third overtime to lift the Ithaca girls over Elmira Southside, 62-60. Ntombela finished with 12 points.

Batavia Notre Dame boys Coach Mike Rapone picked up career win No. 500 on Monday when the Fighting Irish defeated Kendall, 70-37.

Hockey teams OK'd: West Seneca East and West high schools will add boys varsity hockey next school year after getting unanimous approval from the school board on Monday. It will cost the district about $28,000 for each team, AD Timm Slade told The Buffalo News.

Veteran leadership: The Post-Star reported this week on Peter Rampp, who has been retired for more than a quarter century but is now the rookie head coach of the boys basketball team at Wells High — at the age of 81. He is believed to be the state's oldest active coach.

Rampp, whose team is off to a 1-8 start, took the job at the request of AD Mark Richards after no one applied for the vacant position.

"He's an old-school guy in a new-school era," Richards told the paper. "Peter has taken his lumps. But he has great moral character and a big heart, and to me that outweighs the little things."

Extra points: Fayetteville-Manlius voters will decide March 5 whether or not the high school needs a new athletic stadium. A $4.6 million proposition calls for a new stadium, including bleachers and artificial turf, along with improvements to the high school library.
