NYSSWA All-State plaques

John Moriello's NYSSWA blog
Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008: Successful day on the mats for Meys, Spencerport
Leading off today: Shenendehowa senior Hunter Meys broke the national high school record for career falls with a pin of Ian Morgan of Springfield, Mass., Cathedral High at the Shenendehowa Invitational yesterday.

Meys' pin 50 seconds into the 189-pound match eclipsed the record of 188 pins by Steve Mocco of Blair Academy in New Jersey in 2001.

Spencerport wrestlers prevail: Spencerport will hang on to its No. 1 NYSSWA ranking following a big day at the Union-Endicott Duals that concluded with a 33-14 victory over Fulton in the championship match.

The Rangers defended their tournament title after scoring wins by margins of 53-4 over Mexico and 43-10 over Brentwood in the day's earlier action.

The six top-ranked large schools in the NYSSWA ratings participated in the toutnament. Brentwood topped Brockport in the third-place match, 29-18. Fulton had down Brockport in the semifinals, 33-17.

Saratoga loses Stevens: Saratoga Springs 6-foot-5 forward Jordan Stevens, an 11th-team Class AA all-state selection last year as a sophomore, will miss an estimated six weeks after breaking a bone in his left hand, Coach Mitch Snyder told The Post-Star.

Stevens, averaging 22.6 points per game, was hurt in a 79-63 win over Glens Falls on Dec. 27 but the injury wasn't diagnosed until three days later.

Stevens averaged 18.7 points per game as a sophomore.

Honor for Peekskill's Panzarano: Peekskill, top-ranked in Class A by the NYSSWA, ran off its 10th consecutive boys basketball victory yesterday over St. Anthony's.

Before the game — which turned out to be a 53-37 triumph — it was announced that the Peekskill basketball

court was being named in honor of 25th-year coach Lou Panzanaro.

"The whole thing seems surreal," Panzanaro told The Journal News. "To see my whole family here, some of them came from even Maine to be here. I'm just honored that the board approved this, but I've been really fortunate to have great players and great coaches around me here at Peekskill."

It may have been a costly victory, however. Senior captain Elliot Watson went down with an ankle injury and made only a brief return before having to sit out most of the second half. Daquan Brickhouse, another starter, also suffered an ankle injury and left the game midway through the fourth quarter.

Track and field tidbits: Half Hollow Hills West senior Kyle Merber won the invitational mile in a national-best time of 4:15.13 at the 14th Hispanic Games at the Armory to earn his spot in the 101st Millrose Games next month.

Elmira Notre Dame junior Olivia Weeks set a Section 4 record of 38 feet, one-quarter inch during the Southern Tier Invitational at Cornell. Corning's A.J. Johnson pulled off an impressive double of 23 feet in the long jump and 46-9 in the triple jump.

A broken trust: The Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin reported today on the topic of sexual abuse on the part of coaches.

While the story leads with references to two out-of-state incidents from recent months, it also delves into the case of Todd J. Broxmeyer, who ran The Field Hockey Academy in the Southern Tier and also served as a volunteer assistant at Newark Valley. Broome County sheriff's investigators charged Broxmeyer last month with rape and sexual abuse, the paper reported, and authorities last week added a second set of similar charges and also accused him of creating and possessing child pornography.
