NYSSWA All-State plaques

Friday, Jan. 4, 2008: Union-Endicott Duals feature top six large-school teams
Leading off today: The Union-Endicott Duals field tomorrow includes the six top-ranked large-school wrestling teams in the state.

The event begins at 9 a.m. at Union-Endicott High with a field including top-ranked Spencerport, No. 2 Brockport, No. 3 Fulton, No. 4 Chenango Forks, No. 5 Brentwood and No. 6 Johnson City. Waverly, second among small schools, is also entered.

Spencerport is the defending champion, having defeated Fulton, 26-15, in the 2007 championship match.

Win, interrupted: West Virginia-bound Kevin Jones posted 23 points and 20 rebounds yesterday as Mount Vernon topped New Rochelle, 62-57, in a boys basketball game that was suspended 30 minutes in the fourth quarter because of a fire alarm.

Mount Vernon (6-2), ranked ninth in Class AA by the NYSSWA, held a 50-41 lead with 5:47 left when fire alarms sounded. Spectators evacuated the gym, and the New Rochelle fire department quickly responded. It was determined that a steam pipe had burst, setting off smoke detectors.

The teams and fans returned to the gym to resume the game half an hour later. No. 18 New Rochelle came within 58-53 with 1:38 left, but that's as close as it got.

A boost for Hampton Bays: Playoff prospects for the Hampton Bays girls basketball team took a turn for the better over the holiday break as 6-2 senior Kelly Cavallo transferred into the school.

Newsday reported Cavallo, a center headed to Saint Joseph's (Pa.), played her Westhampton finale on Dec. 20 and had a career-high 35 points plus 15 rebounds in a 47-35 win against Mount Sinai. She posted a 21/13 double last night as Hampton Bays beat Southampton, 40-19.

Cavallo's family owns homes in both communities She played varsity ball for Hampton Bays in eighth grade.

Who's up for a challenge? St. Anthony's AD Don Buckley sent along an e-mail saying he's trying to schedule a football game for the Sept. 5-6 weekend.

The good news is that St. A's is willing to travel and isn't asking for a return game, meaning it's a no-strings-attached home game sitting there for the taking.

The bad news is, of course, that St. Anthony's is consistently one of the best teams in the state. Off the top of my head, they're 82-6 since the start of the 2000 season, winning at least 10 games each season.

Coaches or ADs can contact Buckley at 631-271-2020 (ext. 229).
