Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007: Sophomore's field goal in overtime rescues Seaford
Leading off today: Sophomore Anthony Gilio's 39-yard field goals in overtime on his first varsity attempt carried Seaford past Roosevelt, 17-14, in a Nassau County football game yesterday.

Seaford (6-0) is ranked 15th in Class B by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

Roosevelt forced overtime when quarterback Korye Hollingsworth ran in from 12 yards out with 28 seconds to play. The extra-point kick failed.

More football: Rickey Stevens ran 135 yards and two TDs, all in the first half, as Gates Chili piled up 419 total yards and beat Webster Schroeder, 42-13.The Spartans are ranked 10th in Class AA and will meet No. 12 Rush-Henrietta next week.

   Other Saturday highlights:

  • In Class AA, top-ranked Monroe-Woodbury beat Pine Bush, 28-16, QB Danny Scalo scored on runs of 28, 30, 31 and 41 yards.
  • Port Richmond got two TDs from Torian Phillips and upset No. 11 Tottenville, 22-7.
  • Ballston Spa surprised Class AA No. 25 Troy, 34-21, as Steve Duncan ran for 160 yards and three TDs.
  • In Class A, No. 10 Grand Street fell to Campus Magnet, 22-20.
  • Aquinas, top-ranked in A, got 118 yards and four first-half TDs from Anthony Fitts to dominate Brighton, 42-7.
  • Peru, sixth in Class B, romped past Ticonderoga, No. 8 in Class D, 41-0. Tyler Hoey threw three touchdowns passes and ran for another score. He was 8-for-12 for 141 yards.
  • In Class C, No. 2 Cardinal O'Hara routed Buffalo St. Joe's, 41-20, to run its winning streak to 25 games. The Hawks next visit Steubenville (Ohio), which owns a 39-game winning streak.
  • Also in C, No. 4 Cambridge held off Voorheesville, 28-21, as Adam Lajara carried 24 times for 170 yards.
  • QB Aaron Kilner was 5-for-5 for 280 yards and five TDs as James I. O'Neill beat Spackenkill, 49-20.
  • Gerald Levano's 34-yard field goal as time expired lifted Chaminade past Mount St. Michael, 15-14. Linebacker Bobby Lucas forced three fumbles and recovered one with :54 to play to set up Levano's kick.
Milestones: Walton football coach Jim Hoover picked up his 250th career victory Saturday in a 66-0 rout of Harpursville. His team, ranked third in Class D, has posted six consecutive shutouts — outscoring opponents 343-0 in that span.

Boys & Girls newcomer commits: Patrick Jackson, a 6-foot-6 small forward from Brooklyn Boys & Girls, gave an oral commitment to play basketball for Rutgers next fall, NYCHoops.net reported.

Jackson, who averaged 15.2 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists last season at Xaverian before transferring to Boys & Girls, chose the Scarlet Knights over Virginia Tech. Jackson can sign a National Letter of Intent the week of Nov. 14.

Format change for Nike Team Nationals: Meet organizers announced Tuesday that the new Nike Team Nationals New York region will have championship cross country races after all.

Nike had originally announced that New York's reps -- two boys and two girls teams -- would be selected based on performances in key races this season as the state's teams comprised their own region for the first time.

New York's qualifier will be run at Bowdoin State Park in Wappingers Falls on Nov. 24 in conjunction with the NTN Northeast regional championships the same day and place. Top qualifiers move on to the fourth Nike Team Nationals Dec. 1 in Portland, Ore.

"Initially we had planned to have teams from New York be chosen by committee selection but have since determined it is possible to hold a separate race consisting of New York teams only," the announcement said.

With the change, there's now far less incentive for top teams to appear at the Federation race the previous weekend, also at Bowdoin State Park. Look for a number of top contenders, especially from upstate sections, to skip the Federation meet based on the additional expense and the number of consecutive weekends with high-power meets.

Going too far: A San Antonio girls volleyball team found a bloody deer carcass on its bus after a recent match against a rival. Members of the Comfort Whitetail Deer squad were the victims of the disgusting prank after playing at Blanco High.

A letter of apology was sent to Comfort High following the incident. Blanco's principal expressed disappointment and made it clear to students that such behavior won't be tolerated.

Extra points: In cross country, Smithtown's boys posted a second-place showing at the Brown Invitaional, falling to Brookline, Mass., 46-74.
