NYSSWA All-State plaques

Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007: No. 4 Churchville-Chili eliminated from Class AA playoffs
Leading off today: Freshman quarterback Ashton Broyld scored on a three-yard run with 47 seconds left as Rochester Marshall upset Churchville-Chili, 18-14, in the Section 5 Class AA quarterfinals last night.

Churchville-Chili, ranked fourth by the New York State Sportswriters Association, had defeated the Jurists by a 31-6 margin in a season-opening game Sept. 1.

Broyld ran 12 times for 144 yards. He also completed 10 of 17 passes for 157 yards. Marshall (4-3), the defending sectional champ, drove 82 yards over the final seven minutes to oust Churchville-Chili, which welcomed top college prospect Averin Collier back from an elbow injury.

   A few other noteworthy games:

  • East Rochester/Gananda, 15th in Class B, held Westmoreland (No. 20 in Class C) to 23 yards of total offense and earned a 26-0 victory. Josh Dodsworth ran for two short TDs to build a 12-0 halftime lead.
  • In Class AA, No. 17 Troy LaSalle edged No. 18 Troy for the Collar City Cup, 19-14, by limiting big-yardage junior Marquis Terrell to 17 carries for 54 yards. Senior Jared Henkel threw for 224 yards and a score.
  • Eastchester, No. 21 in Class A, edged Nyack, 20-19, with the help of a missed extra point in the final minute to set up a big game at No. 7 Harrison next week.
  • In Class C, No. 7 Unatego edged No. 19 Trumansburg, 14-12, by stuffing a potential two-point conversion run with under a minute to go.
  • Groton, No. 11 in Class D, steamrolled Moravia, 40-16 as sophomore Ethan Tilebein carried 15 times for 214 yards and four TDs.
  • Moriah, No. 8 in Class D, beat Moriah, 15-7, with the help of three Matt Streeter field goals. He hit from 42 yards and twice from 29.
  • Artie Zhushma tied a Herkimer record by passing for five touchdowns and also ran for two during a 48-18 rout of Sauquoit Valley. Zhushma was 11-for-17 for 158 yards and ran 13 times for 84 yards.
Cooperstown icon White dies: Dick White, boys basketball coach at Cooperstown for 27 seasons, died

Tuesday from prostate cancer. He was 67.

Playing for him was life-altering," Otsego County Chief Assistant District Attorney John Lambert told The Observer-Dispatch. "With him, it was more than a basketball lesson. It was a lesson on how to get through life."

White coached from 1969 to 1996 and compiled a 410-155 record. His teams won 14 Center State Conference titles and five Section 3 championships.

Milestones: Fillmore junior Allison Richter scored her 100th career goal Friday in a 2-1 soccer loss to Bolivar-Richburg. Richter, a two-time all-state selection in Class D, also has 45 assists.

Dick Pike, 62, winless at Rye Country Day in 1983 as a complete soccer novice, improved his girls coaching record to 250-101-33 last weekend.

Fatal Wisconsin accident: Two people died in Lake Geneva, Wis., after their SUV was broadsided by a school bus Friday evening.

Nine members of a high school soccer team on the bus were hurt, but their injuries were not serious.

Extra points: Gregg Sarra caught up with the Sayville girls soccer team, whose coach John Schroeder died last weekend. It's a nice read available on the Newsday site. . . . By the way, Gregg blogged mid-week about coaches calling in incomplete game details, particularly scoring information for the opposing team. It's been a chronic problem for newspapers for years but has gotten especially awful in the last five years. . . . Can anyone figure out how to navigate the high school sports pages on Syracuse.com these days? On the other hand, The Observer-Dispatch web site has improved dramatically this fall. . . . U.S. women's soccer star Abby Wambach paid a surprise visit to the Victor girls team this week. Wambach and Blue Devils Coach Kelly O'Neill Ahern. Wambach and Ahern were teammates at Our Lady of Mercy.
