Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007: Frightening concussion data for female athletes
Leading off today: The New York Times reports on high school sports about as often as Travis Henry gets asked to deliver the keynote address at Promise Keepers conventions, but that publication makes up for it by delivering quality.

Fresh off writing about concussions in football, the paper's Alan Schwarz has followed up by reporting yesterday that concussions in girls sports also often go unreported.

Citing an upcoming study in the Journal of Athletic Training, he reported high school girls soccer players sustain concussions 68 percent more often than boys do. Additionally, female concussion rates in basketball are almost three times higher than among boys.

The study examined data from 425 certified athletic trainers across the United States during the 2005-06 school year. It determined that football has the highest rate of concussions in high school sports, with 47 such injuries per 100,000 player games or practices. Girls soccer was second (36), followed by boys soccer (22) and girls basketball (21).

Milestones: Two-time state champion Casey Matthews broke the state's six-dive record for 1-meter diving in Williamsville North’s 65-36 win over Sweet Home yesterday. Matthews' score of 354.05 points obilterated the mark of 322.65 by Cassandra Cardinale of Shaker in 1996.

Newark Valley's girls ended the Elmira Heights Edison cross country team's five-year streak of 59 victories in Interscholastic Athletic Conference events yesterday at Tioga.

Recruiting news: Guilderland basketball star Brett Marfurt will continue his career at Colgate next year, having committed earlier this week.

The 6-foot-4 senior averaged 17.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks a game as a junior to earn 11th-team all-state honors in Class AA.

He was also considering Bucknell, Lehigh and Yale.

Extra points: The Hoover (Ala.) school board postponed acting on an investigation into its high school football team until at least Oct. 10. The probe involved possible grade changes and other problem areas while the team won six straight state titles beginning in 2000. Hoover gained national attention when MTV chose that team to be the subject of Two-A-Days, a reality TV series. . . . Next up under the microscope will be the West Monroe (La.) Rebels, who will be documented in Varsity Inc., a six-part series to be shown on ESPN beginning Nov. 29. . . . Eight Cheektowaga JFK athletes, including three football players, are suspended from after-school activities for 30 days after admitting they drank alcohol Saturday before attending the homecoming dance.
