Monday, June 11, 2007: Injury-riddled Hogue suffers another setback
Leading off today: If it wasn't for bad luck, Doug Hogue wouldn't have any luck.

The Roosevelt High senior lost most of his senior football season to injuries last fall, and he had to make an early exit from Sunday's Governors Bowl all-star game at Rutgers University.

The Syracuse-bound running back suffered an upper-back strain while playing on special teams early in the first quarter and missed the rest of New York's 21-14 loss to New Jersey.

New York was already thin at running back in part because any number of candidates to play in the game were still involved in state lacrosse, track or baseball championships across the state over the weekend. Lackawanna's Curtis Underwood rushed 13 times for 38 yards and a touchdown, but the squad's other backs combined for four carries and minus-4.

Replays of the game can be seen on the MSG Network on Tuesday at 7 and 11 p.m., then again at noon on Wednesday.

Following up: The aftermath of Arielle Newman's death is already producing some important reporting, with a tip of the hat going to The Advance of Staten Island. That paper talked to coaches over the weekend and found that several are rethinking all aspects of medications and treatments used on athletes in the aftermath of Newman's death.

Newman, 17, died April 3 after her body absorbed lethal levels of methyl salicylate, an ingredient found in sore muscle treatments like BenGay, Icy Hot and Tiger Balm. Newman was using a cream, adhesive pads containing the anti-inflammatory and another product with the chemical, said Ellen Borakove, spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner.

Extra points: A couple of dailies posted briefs on their sites Monday promoting stories worth checking out when you roll out of bed on Tuesday. The Ithaca Journal says Terry Habecker is out as boys soccer coach at Ithaca High after 34 seasons on the job. Meanwhile, The Journal News says at least three senior softball players at Clarkstown North were punished for missing a game in order to attend their senior prom, costing them post-season honors.
