NYSSWA All-State plaques

John Moriello's NYSSWA blog
Monday, May 21, 2007: Tappen Zee wins Morabito softball championship in Binghamton
Leading off today: Julie Pacino's two-run home run in the fifth inning lifted Tappan Zee to a 6-3 win over Binghamton in the final of the James "Ace" Morabito softball tournament Sunday.

Pacino, who went 4-for-6 with a walk and five RBI in two games, also threw out two basestealers at second base.

Sunday's most impressive performance in the 16-team tournament may have come from Kenmore West, which managed a split of two games despite having 11 players return to Buffalo Saturday night for the junior prom. They got back on the road at 4 a.m. Sunday to return to Binghamton.

Albany CBA picks Gormley: Matt Gormley, who has coached modified and JV football there since 1984, will run the varsity at Albany CBA this fall.

Gormley, 48, replaces Jim Smith, who is retiring. He will be just the third CBA football coach in 40 years.

NFA's ace pitcher: Senior right-hander Kyle Putnam of Newburgh Free Academy is 6-0 and has not allowed an earned run in 41 innings heading into today's game at Washingtonville.

Putnam, who has accepted an approximately 75 percent

scholarship from Marist, threw a perfect game in a 2-0 victory over Valley Central a week ago. He was perfect through 20 batters in his first start of the season in Myrtle Beach, against a team playing its 21st game of the season, and settled for a no-hitter.

Extra points: Former Fredonia High standout athlete Jenn Stuczynski set the U.S. women's record in the pole vault Sunday by clearing 15-10 1/2 at the Adidas Track Classic in Carson, Calif. Stuczynski, 25, topped Stacy Dragila's U.S. mark of 15-10 and was the only vaulter over 15 feet in the meet.

Fire early Sunday gutted the auditorium of Garfield High in East Los Angeles, the school that inspired the movie Stand and Deliver. If you've never seen the movie, Edward James Olmos deservedly snared an Oscar nomination for his role. It's worth picking up at the video store.

I spent part of Sunday watching the tape on MSG of Delbarton, N.J., beating Chaminade, 8-7, in a boys lacrosse showdown. About all I can say is, "Wow." Chaminade is a bit hobbled by injuries right now, but the quality of play by both teams was exceptional. (Catch more replays today at 2 p.m. and Tuesday at noon.) Delbarton vs. West Genesee or Huntington would be a game that I'd be willing to pay professional-level ticket prices to watch.
