NYSSWA All-State plaques

John Moriello's NYSSWA blog
Friday, April 27, 2007: East Ramapo baseball players robbed during game . . . and not by the umps
Leading off today: East Ramapo baseball team members had nearly $2,500 of personal property stolen from their locker room Thursday during a game against Scardsale at Ramapo High School.

Missing items included wallets, iPods, handheld electronic games and jewelry, police said. The room was locked, and police believe someone may have used a key to gain entry; two similar incidents occurred during the fall.

Baseball coach accused: An assistant baseball coach at Manhattan's Norman Thomas High is accused of clubbing two teens with a bat after a scrimmage, authorities said.

Ernest Cruz, 34, allegedly attacked the students at Fort Hamilton High School on Tuesday after they cheered for one of their team's pitchers. Cruz denied starting the fight and claimed self-defense after he and team members were confronted by nearly a dozen youths while walking to their bus.

At least two youths suffered injuries, authorities said, with one of them treated for a broken jaw.

Cruz was arraigned in Brooklyn Criminal Court on assault, menacing, harassment and weapons charges and released without bail.

Looking for loooong games: Phil Lowry, a visitor to the site, is putting together an unusual list and is seeking

your help in compiling the longest games in high school and American Legion baseball.

He is looking for nominations both in terms of innings played and duration (in hours and minutes). He's trying to trace the evolution of the record at each level, so feel free to send him information on games lasting 13 innings or more; I think we've probably all had at least one 12-inning game in our respective neighborhoods.

His best guesses at the state records for now are:

  • High schools: 20 innings, Newtown defeated Bryant, 3-2, on May 15, 1947.
  • American Legion: 21 innings, Depew Post 1528 4, Orchard Park Post 567 3, played June 16, 17 and 19, 2000.
Send your nominations directly to Phil Lowry.

Extra points: Unless the results from the Penn Relays web site contain a typo, everyone else is playing for second in the girls long jump at this spring's NYSPHSAA championships. Uniondale junior Ashley Hendrix's 19-2.75 on Thursday at Franklin Field is way too good for this early in the season. . . . Silly message board fodder of the week: Claims that the 13 Section 3 schools that formed a new league last week will now seek to become a separate section within the NYSPHSAA are absolutely ridiculous on so many levels. It won't happen -- because it can't happen -- so stop cluttering my Internet with rubbish.
